Kent Hughes mentioned wanting to not use Carey Price’s LTIR cap space if at all possible in an attempt to get the Canadiens closer to normal salary cap compliance.     I hope Monty gets a new contract, with a nice dollar amount. He played well. I think a pretty good goalie.

    I don't understand how putting on LTIR after the season starts saves space, can someone explain it to an newer fan 🙂

    Getting under the cap actually won't be that hard.

    If they trade desmith without taking any cap back that cant be buried then all they would have to do is paper down two waiver exempt players (barron xhekaj for example) and that gets them to 83 million

    Thats not how LTIR works. LTIR doe not create cap space out of thin air. To put someone on LTIR you need to be able to fit him under your cap first.

    If the waiver eligible players are sent down on a paper transaction, we would save up to 1.1M (ish) per player. we just need 4 of these sent down the night before, then put Price on LTIR and call them back up! voila!

    So after the presser of Kent Hughes I wanted to see what he meant by the team could be under the cap, and if you do the the math, by sending down 5 of the 6 non-waiver eligible players (those players being Guhle, RHP, Barron, Harris, Slafkovsky and Xhekaj) the Montreal would save between 4.666 Million and 4.988 (depending on who they send down, but in any case their cap hit is 3.777 over the cap so that would make them go under that cap while carying 21 players (12 fowards, 6 defenseman and 3 goalies) which is a nhl eligible roster and then they could recall their players before game 1 and put price on in season ltir instead of off-season

    Montembeault's camp may not want to sign just yet. If so, there's nothing Hughes can do. Monty's 27, headed to UFA rather than RFA, played very well internationally and the Habs net is apparently his for 24. He could very well be uninterested in an extension and simply betting big on himself.

    I anticipate Gallagher to be injured…again…and maybe if it's serious enough…put HIM on LTIR …that's another 6.5 mil. to work with..!!

    No rush on a Monty contract, they'll see how he handles being more of the main starter and go from there.
