Bang on re Tavares. He will be the cause of the Leafs demise.
the "NMC" on JT's contract was not a smart play.
why don't we sign willy to a short term deal and when jt off the books than get the long term deal done.
willy had a interview today on 32thoughts podcast and he basically told everyone to relax there lots of time the deal will get done because he doesn't want to play anywhere else but Toronto
Not sure why anyone thinks other GMs will help the Leafs by giving them anything of value in a trade for Nylander. All they have to do is wait until next season and pick him up for free. The only GM who might give up future assets in terms of draft picks is Dubas if the Penguins are in a playoff position by trade deadline.
If they don’t sign before the season starts get Rid of both of them , Nylander will get paid every $ he wants of he will go to Free Agency and get it somewhere else , Every other star player signed before season started McDavid , Pasternak think what Travares did in NY oh I want to play only there boom Signs in Toronto
JT's contract is the problem. Nothing against him he's a great player, but the Leafs didn't/don't need him. Toronto signed him because he was available and it made a cute story not because they needed him.

Sign Matthews, and let Nylander play his arse off in a contract year, and essentially let him walk afterwards
maybe three year bridge contracts for both: Matthews first year $12 million, then $13 million for two years; Nylander first year $9 million, then $10 million next two years?
Matthews is holding out for 14.5 x 3yrs. He wants every penny with a short term deal so he can cash-in when the cap jumps.
Nylander wants 85% of Matthews.

What is cool is that Matthews can honestly say to Leafs fans 1) he wants to stay and 2) all the while he plans to play out his contract and then leaves (maybe to join Dubas in Pittsburgh). Sure Matthews might have wanted to stay a Leaf – yet he needs to become a Penguin to realistically have a chance to win a Stanley Cup (really the only way for a Leaf player to win this century has been to get out of Toronto to play on another NHL team).
Tavares contract is way too high, he's not 10m quality, he's a solid guy and pretty good player but half the time the team doesn't need him.
If austin doesn’t sign for 8 i am ok with trading him and giving nylander 10*8 if austin signs for 8 i am ok with trading nylander…. If we have to lose both trade them now grab players who want to win.

I don't think it's commendable for him to get as much as he possibly can and screw this team that's worked so hard. I think commendable would be to take a hometown discount knowing how tight our cap is. Same goes to Auston. What is 1 mil different at that amount. I would. I'm sure guys like Clark and Dougie would have too back in the day.
Also I disagree with the Johnny T point. He scored the series clinching goal, he also scored the winning goal on the stupid pick call the year before vs Tampa. Johnny T is clutch. sure he gets paid a lot but that's from years ago, he gets too much grief in this town and not enough love. The first guy to come back and Want to be a Leaf
