Maple Leafs-van Riemsdyk decision will be ‘real interesting’

NHL insider Doug MacLean says if the Toronto Maple Leafs decide to move away from or can’t afford upcoming free agent James van Riemsdyk, it will leave a big hole in front of the net on the PP.

  1. Trade while JVR's value is at it's very highest. Leafs won't be able to afford his asking price with Marner, Matthews, Nylander ELC's about to expire.

  2. JVR is really good at what he does with his net front presence… so if they trade him away they better get a top 4 d man or Leafs Nation is gonna riot

  3. He's been playing alot better I'm sure he's been told they want to keep him …his confidence has gone up over night …thats what I think

  4. Give your head a shake there Dougie, how much of a discount are you asking the guy to take? With expiring ELC's they can't afford 6, is 5 really going to make a difference? The Leafs can't afford to sign him no matter what.

  5. I'm almost glad Nylander is having a bad year, makes it cheaper to re-sign him. I think Matthews will also take a discount, he won't want to end up in a McDavid situation.

  6. If JVR gets resigned it's going to be for one year. If it's a 6 yr deal then the Leafs just chose JVR over Marner which would be silly. JVR at 32 is not going to be better than Marner at 24. If you can grab a player at least 75% of what JVR is for next year and this year? Do it. They have the depth to trade him. Bozak? Not unless you're getting a better defensive C in replace of him. The Leafs C depth is actually it's weakest point right now. Marleau can't play C all year. Gauthier may not be ready yet. Tbh if they trade Bozak I would love to have a Cullen type C in return. Great two way C with true veteran experience. Bozak for Sutter from Vancouver would be a great trade to me for the Leafs and the Canucks.

  7. If Leafs trade jvr can they afford who they trade him for? Top 4 defenceman is gonna cost what he's asking now and you won't get picks until the dead line so either he walks or he's resigned to some kinda magic deal….

  8. I think he should stay. Give him the 7 year deal he wants then give him 3-4 mill a year since he said he would take a pay cut

  9. I think they plan on JVR being gone next year, which is why we haven't heard a peep from any agents regarding Leivo, Kapanen, Sosh not playing. Lou has probably communicated as much, remember they protected Leivo. Playing JVR in spots where he can succeed only ups his value.

  10. JVR had missed at least a half a dozen tap ins from Marner the two weeks prior to the home and home with Boston. When he doesn't have Marner feeding him tape sauce he does jack. I have noticed a little more commitment to forechecking recently, but he's usually tardy and soft in that regard. He's also deficient in his own zone, especially at covering high slot weak side and being tardy or too high on the rim around…

  11. 2;16 lol the immediate no

but i rather get rid of bozak and bring up moore or put marleau at center or even… stay with me now… bring up miro Aaltonen from the marlies

  12. Leafs need to keep jvr unless it's for a top 4 d-man with a pick..JVR is a beast & can't be replaced. Kapanen isn't better than jvr in terms of playing the regular season. Kap has only 1 point in 20 nhl games. He was only good at playoffs.

  13. if no one gets him red wings need him. we have like one superstar and he's not evening a superstar anymore.

  14. That would be so awesome if everyone on the team took discounts just so they can keep this group together for many years and bring in several cups while they're at it. But hockey is not just a fun sport, it's above all else a business. It's a nice thought though.
