Let me know your thoughts on this 4 year contract extension
sorely over payed and not even locked up long term. this could actually be the single worst contract in nhl history, even worse than the dipietro contract years ago. toronto is gonna be fucked for at least the next 4 years. as a habs fan… enjoy the soon to come rebuild
If contracts were negotiated for playoff performances, Matthews would be a 4 million dollar player tops! LOL

It seems like Leaf fans forget Tyler Bozack. Mathews percentage of the cap when signed is 15.8 % while McDavid s when signed was 16.67%, cap goes up consistently so only way you can compare it.❤❤❤❤

It is a terrible deal. Wait before you go off on statement. I will give you three reasons why it is not a good signing. 1 – Technically it means that Austin Mathews is a better player than Connor McDavid. Connor is 12.500,000 and team friendly. He came off a 60+goal season. Which means they keep Leon Draisaitl at 8,000,000 also team friendly and Zach Hyman for 5,000,000 bargain bin deal. He came off 5,000,000 and 37 goals season. I would keep Zach Hyman any day over William Nylander. They all pass the litmus test. They are loyal to their team. They have heart soul and grit. They are about team first so they have team friendly players that think about the team.
2- They give the team as whole a chance. Connor and company gave a chance to bring in good players that will compliment the top players. They all sign long extensions.
3- If you had to trade Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl and Zach Hyman for Austin Mathews, Mitch Marner and William Nylander straight up. Would it be possible? Easy answer. The Toronto Maple Leafs have the players coming in every year to compliment their core four. They are all have been good teams but fail miserably in the playoffs.
4- Finally the core four takes up all the Leafs money. Stamkos could have been a Leaf but he stayed in Tampa bay and took a discount. Is it ironical that Stamkos who is not a fighter put the fists to Austin Mathews. What a beat down. The most important quality in hockey is not skill but character. Specifically. Will to win, loyalty, selflessness and team gelling. This team is doomed to fail again as the poison is in the core four. Players will come and always go because we don't have the money to keep them.
The league makes millions off of these players, so they are well within their right to get every penny.

I would have traded him to Arizona for at least three 1st round draft picks and money back.
If they aren't carful the'll be picked clean. Its going to be hard to recruit solid depth and role players if they end up shelling out well over 50million on 4 guys.
No, it's a crappy deal for the Leaf's. They should have traded Matthews to the Rangers for LaFreniere, their second line center, a defenseman or a goalie and two prospects or draft choices.
As of right now The Leafs are around 11 Million over the cap for this season. How is this possible considering the Bruins had to have a fire sale to get under the cap.

Let's be realistic here…..given his stature as one of the elite goal scorers in the NHL the Leafs were up against the wall here. Matthews (barring injury) will produce in the regular season at least. They had to pay him or risk losing him for ZIP!!!! Welcome to the modern day NHL. It's going to continue so we'd better get used to it.

If you follow all professional sports leagues closely you'll understand this AAV. Simply put Matthews was next man up for contract renewals. His talent and numbers are legit. It's Leaf fans that are the problem.😊

What A horrible contract wow,way over paid
Well, I’ve been a maple leaf fan for a very long time. I’ve never seen so much grief in my entire life that was for players so I should say three players don’t care about winning a cup They care about their pockets being filled and how much money they could have got nothing to do with the Stanley Cup, look at McDavid Draisaitl Nathan MacKinnon take an eight year deals. These are very, very selfish players. Quite frankly if I was a general manager, I would just get rid of him. How are you supposed to build a team around three people that take most of the cap man disappointed to hear just a four year deal, we have so many things going on in this world and these athletes act like a bunch of selfish, freaking brats. You lose interest, watching your favourite team play because they don’t play with heart they play with greed

13,250,000 is a discount NO. Maybe 12 Million would have been a discount. Atleast he did what he said "Sign with the leafs" unlike Kyle.
I felt it would be 4 year extension, so it's 5 years including this coming season. I figured around 13-13.5M if it was going to be a shorter term. I'm in the minority part of the fan base that didn't want a long 8 year term with him. Good that it's finally done, and is one less distraction. I agree he probably could've gotten 14M on the open market next summer. Not sold that they can win much of anything with this guy as one of the "leaders", but we'll see what happens.
Well there goes the Stanley Cup… $13.25 million means Nylander is worth $10.25. The Leafs caved! If Matthews was so good he would have proved it in the playoffs! He never has!

I'm 65 and watched the leafs my entire life. I've never seen a player like Matthews with so much ability play for the leafs. The only reason they haven't won a cup with him is because Dubas recruited a bunch of weaklings instead of warriors. Go Leafs Go . And don't be so jealous of the Maple Leafs.
This game is based on playoff performance and 5 wins this past year is a joke. In what universe is Matthew's worth more than Makinnon? Who has drive, the stats and a cup ring? Guess leaf fans don't want a stanley cup unless an ex leaf (Naz) brings it to town to show toronto fans what it looks like. Who also leaves next year just like O'riley who knows this is not a cup team. Over paid barbies.

Too much money….Nylander is all but gone….Matthews should've signed for 8 years if he really loves Torornto as much as he says.
What most ppl miss is, Matthews is a strong 2 way player. How many times has he back checked and saved a few goals? Is this an exellent signing? I'm on the fence.. I think he's a stronger player than marner in terms of mental stability. However, I think the M&M duo will be solid with grittier players on the team and Nylander gone in exchange for a grittier winger in his place. The defense is super weak and I am not confident in our goalies. Offense will do jist fine me thinks.

Terrible contract. Results matter not stats. Jonathon Marchessault, no name player, 5 mil contract, wins Conn Smythe and Stanley Cup. Matthews wins all the individual trophies but playoffs are his time to relax, so this will tie the Leafs hands in the future when pushed against the cap. Should have traded him and got at least 3 1st rounders and a blue chip player.
The contract is okay. Yes Marner will want more but he wont get more than 11M he isn't worth more than that. I can see them eventually moving on from Marner unless they mwke a deep playoff run where he nkes an impact. Nylander will probably get 9.25

If you raise contracts just based on cap increase and not value then there is essentially no increase. They just all get a pay raise and theres no more room again.
This will set off a chain of events where players will get paid two or three times what they're worth and won't deliver a cup
