Exceptional details in Shane Wright’s game will take him to a top 5 pick in 2022

Elite Prospects lead scout David St-Louis takes you into the Film Room™️ to look at how the exceptional details in Shane Wright’s game elevate him past the sum of his parts, right to the first overall spot in the 2022 NHL Draft.

Wright was the first overall pick in the latest Elite Prospects draft ranking, and they’re going to produce another one in the coming weeks for the 2022 NHL Draft. You can check out their latest ranking on EP Rinkside: https://eprinkside.com/2021/12/01/the-ep-rinkside-pre-world-juniors-2022-nhl-draft-ranking

  1. I would like to point out that Wright seems like a dynamic athlete. He seems very strong and has a lot of potential to become very explosive, kind of like Draisaitl. In saying this, I am not comparing them as players, but as athletes. Giving that he might have that type of athletic upside, to go along with his sky high hockey IQ, I think people might be underrating his future abilities right now. I think he's got a lot he can work on, but in a few years time he's going to be a no brainer top 10 centre in the NHL. 40 goal potential to go along with amazing defensive instincts. Won't be flashy unless he starts laying the body more / driving wide with the puck once he works on his speed, but nonetheless incredibly effective.

  2. I’m not sure if Wright has the super high upside of guys like Matthews and Mackinnon but I think he will be a surefire 55-75 point player, he’s definitely not gonna be the next Yakupov. I think if your team drafts him you’re hoping he’s gonna be similar to Bergeron or Toews. And it might not be a bad idea to let him play another year in the OHL.

  3. I watched his game on friday and he didnt stand out offensively or defensively at EV. I feel like he wont be a 40 goal scorer nor a 82+ point scorer, however I do see him being an consistent 33-44-77 point player, who will be very good defensively maybe even elite, but maybe not elite defensively. high floor low ceiling.

  4. Of course for highlights he's good, but choose a shift by shift for the real story. We can see the package, but not the effort, he's not doing investments by doing more with less effort in a stock market, he's playing a team sport and if he's a team leader, his team will do the same thing without his package. To success he'll need to be hard drilled by a coaching staff to get more involved in the play. An IQ guy like him should be everywhere on the ice, its what everyone wants. He skates too large, its good for sliding but cannot accelerate out of pressure quickly, this will be a real problem in the NHL cause the pressure is coming fast at you. I can see Tom Wilson get at him every shift against WAS. He did not improve his skating since Don Mills, so Wright is a project and a first overall can't be a project.

The better service to protect the kids from all the pressure that come for a first overall, scouting service should start to downgrade him NOW to protect the kid, this would be a responsible conduct from your part.

  5. Guy became an ANIMAL because he had to carry his whole team when the Front’s were awful.

  6. Hes gonna need elite puckhandling wingers to maximize his strenghts. Guys like Bergeron and Toews can count on Marchand, Pastrnak and Kane (and Debrincat or Panarin), but theyre not players who can do it all by themselves like Mcdavid, Crosby or Mckinnon. I think thats what people expected at first given his exceptionnal status so now it feels like he is disappointing, but its just not his playstyle. As a habs fan Im worried that we cant surround him with fast, skilled wingers and fans will turn on him cause he cant make a guy like Gallagher a 40 goal scorer.

  7. I think the excpectional detail tha will amke him go 1st is his nationality

  8. still think that cooley is better but no complaints if wright goes 1st. Although I think he would benefit from another year in the OHL

  9. It seems to me that Wright and Michkov are similar in some ways. Both dominate the game from a mental standpoint and it makes up for what they may lack in dynamic skating ability. It seems that Wright is more polished defensively but Michkov seems to have the greater flair of creativity/skill.

  10. There is a fine line between the top 3 so a best case scenario would be for the Yotes to send their third pick plus next year's first pick to the Habs for Wright, as the Yotes desperately want him would be great trade for Habs.

  11. people do not understand how bad Kingston is and how much they rely on Wright lol. He's the ONLY reason they made the playoffs and advanced.
