It’s a great move for Mathews. If he’s scoring 50 goals at age 31 which is very likely than he can cash in on a huge 8 year deal then.

Also it’s a good deal for the leafs. If Mathews wanted 8 years he could have forced a deal over 14mill. At least they have 5 years to figure this out at a lower cap hit and if they have no success they have the option to reevaluate when he’s 31 and not in his prime

I don’t agree with them on this being a pseudo ‘5 year’ deal.

It isn’t, if Matthews decides he wants to go to another contender the leafs are not letting him walk in 5 years. They’re moving him in the 4th to re-up on picks and kickstart the rebuild/re-tool.

If the leafs hold on to any picks in the next 4 years they are doing this fanbase a disservice. Treliving and Shanny won’t be around after 4 years if the leafs don’t make a ECF/SCF. Tampa and Bostons windows are waning. The east is ours, foot on the gas.

Any deal we got done to keep Mathews would be considered ‘good’, even though a majority of people don’t necessarily like the deal. Dubas completely fumbled with the previous contract and allowed Mathews and his camp to hold all the cards.

Tre and the organization did the best they could given the situation.
