  1. There ya go ! Everyone is losing their marbles and I am happy ๐Ÿ˜ข (these are not tears I swear )

  2. You sure like hating on Marner who is the only leaf on the #1 unit in every situation. Only guy of the core four that plays the PK. Leads the team in assists every year. The forward that is put with Matthews or Tavares when their not producing. Has more points than both Matthews and Nylander in the same amount of playoff games.

  3. Now that Matthews is the highest paid player in the league, I think it's safe to say that the only thing that justifies this signing is playoff success. Otherwise, the organization got fleeced

  4. Is this contract successful enough to improve things – so the Leafs can win two games in the second round of next springโ€™s playoffs? Only time will tell. That is a pretty low bar to measure playoff success.

  5. 626K more than MacKinnon from his extension signed a year ago. Matthews is the top goal scorer in the NHL since 16/17. He has scored the most goals of anyone 5 on 5 including McDavid. He is a true 200 foot player. Only 3 players in the league last year had net positive penalties, over 50% on faceoffs, 70+ hits, 50+ takeaways, 40+ blocked shots & over 80 points. They were McDavid, Crosby & Matthews. He is an elite centre & plays in Canada with higher provincial & federal taxes, so the 13.25M aav number is pretty much equivalent to Pastrnak at 11.25M in Boston.

The club has him for another 5 years & puts to bed the claims by all the dolts who assured Leaf fans he was leaving for sunnier climates. BTW Zack, you are mistaken. Rantanen coming out of his ELC, only signed for 6 years (9.25M aav), just like Marner. Marner is paid more, again because he plays in Canada. His after tax net dollars are virtually identical to Rantanen. If Rantanen was playing in Toronto, he'd be paid the same as Marner & Tavares. The Leafs, for about 18 years, have overpaid their star players by roughly a million dollars (or more), per year to offset the tax disadvantages of playing in Toronto. They have little choice & it's frankly not a level playing field vs most US based teams. This a good deal despite what the haters say.

  6. This contract makes so much sense AND it's what I suggested might happen in the comments of the last Leafs Digest video! As much as we all hope the Leafs continue to progress and go deeper in the playoffs, I think it's fair to say that is far from a given. So, there is a chance this team will have to be rebuilt. Just ask San Jose how much fun it is to have an unhappy star player with a huge contract that you need to deal. For Auston, it gets him mucho money now and the option to move on if the wheels fall off the Leafs. Plus, he's coming off of a bit of a down season stats-wise. In 2 years, he goes off and puts up massive stats, cap goes up and he does a longer/better extension. Smart contract and everyone comes away feeling good.

  7. I agree with you 100% , the $ is fine but it should of been a 6 or 7 year deal for Mathews,,, as for Nylander I disagree a little he might walk to free agency or say ok Mathews signed Iโ€™ll take the 9.5 your offering, except Iโ€™ll give you 4 years!

  8. I'm pretty happy with the contract. Both parties had to give a little and took a lot. I don't hate 4 years. I think that's a good amount of time to re-evaluate a player in their 30's and go from there. A 4 year deal, like in the NFL, is a LONG time for that time period in a players life, and you'll get good value for them.
Yes the <7 year contracts is frustrating, but it's part of the dance and I wouldn't be surprised if the next deal is 4-5 years as well for the core (if they stay).
All of that, BUT Matthews clearly has made the Leafs a priority for the last 3 signings. Dude bleeds blue, and I love to see it.
