As we all recover from laughing so hard at the Roast & Toast of Tomas Holmstrom and Nicklas Lidstrom, it’s time to catch up on some contract updates across the NHL – starting with the Detroit Red Wings.

We begin by discussing Joe Veleno’s new 1 year, $825,000 deal in Hockeytown, how Steve Yzerman and Derek Lalonde view Veleno’s future in a crowded lineup (with players like Kasper, Danielson, & others looking to take his spot), what his ultimate ceiling is, & more (5:00).

Next, we discuss some massive contracts signed across the league, including Auston Matthews’ 4 year, $13.25 million/year contract in Toronto, Brandon Hagel’s contract in Tampa Bay, & more (15:30) – as well as how this affects teams like Edmonton with Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl coming up.

After that, we take a look at the Detroit Red Wings pipeline and how their future stacks up against their divisional foes, led by the likes of Moritz Seider & Lucas Raymond (35:00) before giving a quick update on the Traverse City prospect tournament & who we’re watching closely (Cossa? Doucet? Lombardi?) (47:50).

Finally, a quick note about the massively successful Jamie Daniels Foundation fundraiser (49:40) before we take your questions and comments during Overtime (53:15) – enjoy!

  1. in a 2019 and 2020 re draft everyone puts seider at 2 and raymond at 2 soo basically we’ve had a top 2 pick 2 times And keep in mind devils we’re rebuilding for years .. buffalo was building for years also red wings real rebuild began 4 years ago plus only 2 prospects have played for detroit we still got tons and tons coming … it’s gonna be another few years but we’re gonna be an amazing team and some high talent trades that yzerman will probably make in the future … we will be amazing in a couple years jusy not soo much now

  2. Veleno's contract is a slap in the face to him. Yes he has shown very slow progression. But he also was drafted way to early based on awesome numbers in the QMJHL. Many players share that story. Alexis Lafreniere comes to mind. Veleno is a solid hockey player taking the normal time to mature. It certainly appears that Yzerman doesn't like him at all. Compare the Zadina contract for affirmation of that. Most likely Yzerman is preparing to trade Veleno. It's pretty obvious to the astute that Yzerman has rid himself of almost every Holland draft pick. What I see here is another Mike Knuble situation unfolding. Knuble could barely made it as a 4th line grinder on the Red Wings team. He was traded away and he turned out to have a fine career as a first and second line power forward type of player. He didn't set NHL records but he was a very good dependable hockey player. But for whatever reason he could barely make the Wings team. The Veleno situation appears to be a history repeat. I hope I'm wrong cause I like Veleno and want him on my team.

  3. I will say…because I’m old lol. I remember when people thought the Wings were crazy for trading Paul Coffey, Ray Sheppard, Dino Ciccarelli etc. The players they got back in those trades were instrumental in the ‘97 Cup win. This team is not done building, they’re just starting. I don’t think fans should be pessimistic. It even shows from those rankings…all the teams ahead of the Wings have won a lottery, or two, or seven, lol. I still don’t trust Ottawa or Buffalo’s ability to field a Cup contender…because they’ve never done it. Buffalo is also a pretty one dimensional team. They’ll get “figured out”.

  4. I need that McDavid Bachelor contract negotiation series. I would watch 12 episodes of that slowly released over the course of 3 months. McDavid taking the GMs on group dates, one on one dates, and a two on one date with rivalry GMs. At the end of each episode McDavid can give out pucks instead of roses

  5. I believe Detroit is still selling at the deadline and Veleno will be on that list. Considering the surplus of player SY has signed so far he's gonna want more draft stock while hoping still the team can keep the pressure for a potential playoff spot for the remainder of the season. Maybe a package for a big piece trade. I'm so pumped to see this seasons outcome because you have the same core and coaching value, and team grit/fight with a lot more depth to the middle of the lineup.

  6. If Veleno wanted just a year why wouldnt he have just taken his qualifying offer? Now he has a year with less money.

  7. My grandma just gave me her redwings/hockey memorabilia collection. Included was Alex Delvecchio’s old stuck. He gave it to her as he got off the ice after a game.

Also included is a puck given to my Grandma from Gordie Howe after a game.

Along with a handful of autographs on items, and old playoff tickets.

I hope to mount the puck and stick with a little comment beneath it indicating the history.

  8. I swear, if we get one more "we'll never be good unless we sign two more of the best players in the world" conversation before the season starts, I'll lose my mind. You won't be competitive for 5 years? Give me a break. I guess pessimism really makes you forget what the top teams last season were like. Vegas won because of depth. Seattle progressed massively thanks to depth. Carolina does not have any superstars. Tampa has their big players, and didn't get far. Boston was the best team of all time, went out in the first round. Edmonton has the two best players over the last few years, they didn't make it.

Do I need to keep going? Expand your discussion beyond what's on paper. That's what a coach is for. They make a team more than the sum of its parts. We can have a lot of really good players who all play well together and outperform a team with weaknesses, no matter how strong some of their pieces are.
