Penguins are banking on their old roster being able to keep up in playoffs, AND, by a miracle, all of them staying healthy. Not good odds…. Dubas is trying to plow the wind in his own sails here, and it may be a disaster of a ship wreck when this is all done this year.
The pens missed the play-offs by one stinking point. They're making it sound like they were at the bottom of the heap. They picked up Phil Kessel when people thought they were on their way down and won two more cups. I think it would be a story book ending if they could come back to win another cup.
They needed a better supporting cast. Dubas seems to have addressed some of that. Hockey is not basketball where you glide by on three or four superstars. Goalie questions are legit. Not sold on Jarry.
Dubas overpays for a player in a position that did not address the needs of the club and puts them up against the cap with no room to fill holes. Seen this story before kids. Dubas said already they are going to 'give some professional tryouts to fill holes'. what a stupid thing fsg did in hiring him.
The Pens replaced Dumoulin and Petry with Graves and Karlsson, that's a massive upgrade in the top 4. Special teams pretty mediocre last year, so guys like Nieto, Eller, Acciari and Reilly Smith were brought in. They have better defensive forwards than they did last year to help the PK, and Karlsson should do wonders for the power play, so the special teams should be much better. People also like to talk bad about Jarry, yes the contract is questionable and he had that bad series in 2021 against the Isles, but he's a two time All-Star and when he's healthy (which he hasn't been but will be going into this year) he's a pretty good goalie.
One thing the Pens have this year that they didn't have last year is organizational depth. Hextall completely ignored it which is why Wilkes Barre was last in the division. They talked about the Pens losing depth with Granlund, Rutta, etc. Those players were literally useless lol, the guys brought in can do as good, if not better than they did for a fraction of the cost.
This team could easily win the cup or miss playoffs… injuries & other BS that happens to every team in the league. Will they stay/get hot going into the the playoffs. They could start season 0-5 & people telling trade everyone…hockey season has ups and downs and that’s why I’d take Sid on my team every time. Also Crosby won’t go anywhere after his contract he’ll retire a Penguin.
I love all the comments on here that are clearly from people that didn’t watch games. The pens biggest problem was the bottom 6 not producing and getting the puck from the defensive zone to the offensive zone. They have clearly upgraded both. Also Jarry has been excellent when healthy and wasn’t last year so time will tell. If you don’t know what you’re talking about why even comment?
Really? They didn’t replace ANY of the pieces that left AT ALL? That’s kind of a ridiculous thing to say since they absolutely did. They got smith when Zucker leaves, they retooled the bottom six, and aren’t done adding to it, the bottom six is unquestionably better than last year and was the main reason other than goaltending that the pens struggled. Also they got the coveted third line center they have needed in Eller.
I didn't hear one relevant comment here. Malkin missed how much time last year? What are you talking about. He played 82 games. Do some research, otherwise it looks like you are a hater. BTW all 3 sounded like haters here. Before they said Pittsburgh had too many bad contracts. Now the problem with this team is 3 years from now? Win now or tear it down. They chose win now. Simple.
You just compared a penguins team with Crosby, malkin, letang, karlsson and Guentzel…. A team minus Karlsson that missed the playoffs for the first time in 17 seasons by A SINGLE POINT, directly as a result of the lack of a supporting cast, to Detroit and Ottawa.. who haven’t been relavent for over a decade. Guys, Sid will never be a leaf. No matter how bad you cry for it. Try acting like an unbiased journalists for for once. This was down right union formed and quite frankly, extremely embarrassing. Not everything has to be a hot take
I’m a pens fan that hopes for another cup, but realizes it’s extremely unlikely. With that said, the amount of media claiming they’re barely a playoff team after missing for the first time in almost two decades by a single point…. I might just put money on them winking the division 😂
Yeah.. this podcast was in my recommended but I will be adding it to my do not recommend pile. If you're gonna opine on a sport, at least do your homework so you can try to sound like you know what youre talking about. Evgeni Malkin played 82 games last year. Stop talking out of your asses.
Who is this clown? The Pens barely missed playoffs with absolute dead weight of Granlund, Petry, Doumolin and Carter playing down the stretch. Don’t forget the joke of Brock McGinn and Heinin. The roster is much better. Jarry is not C/D. He’s been an all star twice. Yes, he needs to perform in playoffs. This is errible surface level “analysis” by supposedly hockey experts, lol.
This is the typical anti-Penguins excrement that Fake News has spewed for decades. The Eastern Conference is in decline. (Lookin' at you, Bruins, Hurricanes, Rangers, Maple Leafs). It will take a while to gel, but the Penguins will be significantly better by the time the new year rolls around. Coupled with a slew of solid upgrades, the Karlsson trade turned a stagnant team into a Stanley Cup contender. This is destined to be remembered as one of the greatest steals in modern league history.
Yo, Burnside, here's the Penguins power play: EK65 on top, Letang and Malkin at the wings, Crosby in the bumper spot and Guentzel down low. Or Crosby and Malkin will switch places. That's four Hall of Famers. Or is it five? #Yowza
Didn't replace the ones they got rid of, why r u even in hockey as a supposed expert. R u delusional, the team is SOOOO much better now then at the end of last season. Can't even watch this

As much as im excited to watch my pens this year, I have to think this was a financial move. LOTS of empty seats and discounted tickets.

Watch Matthews sign after this season with Pens

“Malkin when he was healthy”? He played all 82 games. I don’t think these commentators are following the team enough to comment on them knowledgeably.

They missed by one point dear lord they’re talking like we missed by 20
Dubas is know or going after the best player….its just that its not always the right player.
