  1. Ha ha, I think it's funny that people are blowing this up. As an Avs fan and someone who is lucky enough to watch Toews and Makar play all the time I agree he shouldn't make the top 3. Top 10 yes! But he's an amazing D man and would be a number 1 on many teams out there. He does have exceptional hockey IQ, and his plus/minus since moving to the Avs I believe is top for all D men (if not all players). He's not on the top PP so he doesn't have the opportunity to get as many PP points. I think a big reason for his upswing in play is the confidence he's gained playing with Cale. I've seen him make several rush attacks the length of the ice which just blew me away. I wouldn't trade him for Fox or Hughes, I just hope we can resign him and keep him to ourselves.

  2. Door swings both ways, if Toews isn't Toews than maybe Makar can't be Makar without costing the team because he doesn't play defense first, but most points 5 on 5 when Makar is on your pairing is pretty damn impressive. But your right he new it would trigger most fans.

  3. Hughes is also top 10 without a doubt. Any list not including him is hot stanky garbage.

  4. I'm an Avs fan and I'd agree that 3rd seems a tad bit high. I'd absolutely have him in a top 10 but not sure I'd rank him over someone like Hedman or Fox

  5. Quinn hughes cant defend well and has always been his downfall i dont see enough of adam fox to give what i feel would be an accurate opinion on his defensive play both are obviously elite offensive dman

  6. Defenseman its in the word … defense.

A defenseman that is 99 in defense and 50 in offense is worth more then a defenseman that is 50 in defense and 99 in offense.

Physicality is also very much underrated as a metric (Height, reach, hits, weight, etc.), i remember Hal Gill being famous for just killing plays by lying down on the ice, blocking all chances for a pass.

There is also the classics : blocked shots, SH time, interceptions, the dreaded almost useless +- , etc. (I know advanced stats are a thing)

Some rare specimens like Scott Stevens or Lidstrom nearly had it all, but nowadays people almost only care about how many points a defenseman has to enter the Norris conversation.

I doubt any of the flashy choices are among the top in defensive metrics.

Funny how goalscoring is 100% overlooked, but not points, when talking about forwards its often the other way around.
