How I would grade the Jets
Roster building:C+
As you said, isn't entirely managements fault as Winnipeg is one of the least desirable markets to play in but I do feel they could be more aggressive/ambitious in luring and signing players.
Trades:C+
They don't make many trades unless they're forced to it seems. Niederreiter was a nice addition and the Dubois trade looks good early but still have to see how the new guys fit.
Drafting/Developing:C-
I would've graded them higher but the 2017-2020 years brought the grade down. Vesalainen is a bust to this point, Gustafsson has had injury troubles and hasn't solidified himself in the bottom 6, Heinola also hasn't cracked the roster and Perfetti is also having injury troubles although I do like that pick and feel he can be a top 6 contributor if he can manage to stay healthy.
Team direction:D
I really don't know what they're trying to do. If it is to contend for a cup, they need to be more agressive in rounding out the roster whether that is through trades or FA signings, seems like they were content alot of years to ride the top 6 forwards and Connor Hellebuyck in the net. Bottom 6 has been really underwhelming most of the entire Jets 2.0 era. Only one year I felt they truly had a cup caliber roster and that was 2019. Pretty embarrassing for a team thats been back in the league for 12 years. A lot of other teams seem to have these long contention windows where as for the Jets it seems theirs was open and shut very quickly although some unforeseen things did set them back like Byfugliens sudden retirement and the Bryan Little injury/retirement.
The Jets gotta go the draft and develop route and build some Green Bay style pride. Small town, big results. Making the playoffs doesn’t just give you a shot at the cup, it also makes you better than half the teams in the league.
Take pride Winnipeg.
