The Walker Revolver The True Story of Sam Colt’s Come Back

An entire mythology has grown up around the development of Colt’s Walker revolver, and about Colt’s triumphant return to firearms manufacturing.

The story, as it is usually told, is more legend than truth.

In this video, I’ll try to uncover the real story of the Walker revolver.

  1. An excellent video! No greater reference work can be found than the privately published book "Sam Colts Own Record" published in 1948, which is a transcript of most of the correspondence between Walker, Hayes and the Ordnance Board in 1847 . this sets our in the original poor English all of the problems mentioned here, an excellent read, Chris B.

  2. The most powerful revolver in the world for many years, and if you run out of ammo, just turn it around, grab it by the barrel, and cave the other fella's skull in with the blunt end.

  3. An excellent presentation of an excellent gun! That loading ram though… They fixed much but not that. Thank you for this history lesson.

  4. I have a uberti I've had for about 20 yrs. It is the charcoal finish that isn't very durable but is pretty. I bet I haven't fired two hundred shots out if it. I like it but the 1860 Army revolvers are more practical in CAS and at the range. Great video Mike as always.

  5. I enjoyed the vid and history lesson. Is there a modification that can be done to these reproductions to fix the loading lever falling? (Maybe an idea for a future video?)

  6. I shot the arbor loose on my walker, no more 60 gr. charges.
But it was a blast to shoot.

  7. Seeing you make a 40 min video on the Walker revolver is the high point of my day as we get through Hurricane Idalia! Don’t have Wi-Fi because the outage in my area but sure going to watch this using by data! Thanks Mike!

  8. Entertaining history lesson as usual .You've brought these characters to life. I've confused the Walker with the Dragoon. These Colt history vids have put the various models in perspective. YT is also after archery and medical herbs channels. Many are reposting on Rumble. Greetings from Mayberry, NC, where fall is in the air.

RE not going up the chain of command, even for civilian military employees, would not work today.

  9. Hi Mike, is there any truth about pointed bullets inserted backwards causing early Walker cylinders to fail.

  10. Great video! You know, only in America could get a contract to manufacture hand guns AND THEN worry about getting a factory to do it in! Great story!

  11. Great presentation, Mike! I noticed the handle for seating the round and powder kept flipping downward. Was that a common problem with the walker, or is that just an issue with your weapon?

  12. What all the adds that pop up on your video's. You tube is a hypocrites. Your channel is excellent for leaning knowledge. About guns and gun history. Funny how they gladly like the money it beings them.

  13. Excellent video Mike. Everybody seems to think that the walker was the big comeback. I've always seen it as the Walker was like a version of CPR that brought Colt back to life. The dragoon was the Renaissance and the 49 pocket model was the golden era of Colt in my opinion, Garrett might have a different opinion though he would know more on this sort of thing than I would

  14. Thanks for the interesting real story about the Colt Revolver.
Actually truth is more interesting than fiction.

  15. Never owned a Walker but I have owned several Dragoon replicas. I do like Dragoons, bought my first one in 1968.

  16. Amazing video Mike! I love history like this very much. When the truth isn't good enough print the fiction story. 🤠
