Maybe they’d prefer he stay in their system and get top minutes in the VHL rather than go somewhere else and play less minutes? That way when injuries do happen they can just call him up?

This is why you don’t draft Russians unless they already came over for juniors or are 100% sure things.
They will openly fuck around with players that they know are trying to get to the NHL.
