We are still several years away from a new Cale Makar contract, but it’s never too early to surmise about what his next deal will look like. Could be he be the highest paid player in the league? The Avalanche will know exactly what Connor McDavid will be at since he will have a new deal the year before Makar is due. Do the Avalanche need to make him the highest paid? Would he be happy with the “home town discount” knowing there likely will be a team to throw crazy money at him?

Beware Calgary throwing 16.5 at Cale…
Cale Maker at 9 million a year isn’t a steal. Makar will be paid 12 million a year in his new contract in 2026 but he won’t pass Conner McDavid new annual salary. You two make unnecessary discussion that won’t happen in the far far future.
NHL is very international in their players. MLS is not a league to watch and follow in their footsteps. The NHL is well over 100 years old. Keep the salary cap the way it is. Playoffs having no cap is cool

For a designated player, just have the contract have a 50% weighting towards the cap. I.e. 16m contract is an 8m hit instead, which leaves 8m leftover for an upper tier, but not elite, player. Thoughts?
