Thompson or Tkuchuk would be a harder decision for me over Matthews. I know Matthews is a star, but he also plays with the star playmaker Marner.

Id need to see more than two years of tage being good if i was gonna pick him over mathews. I'd pick tage because of the salary though for sure but if they both cost 7 million id take mathews right now

Tage all day long over Matthews. I believe Matthews peaked already. Dahlin contract 8yrs × 10.5 per. Tage & company will bring us a CUP OR CUPS. Matthews will never deliver a cup no way no how.
Matthews is currently 5th in NHL HISTORY in goals per game, it's very easily Matthews over Tage lol. He's pacing Ovechkin's career and is well on track to be a top 10 goal scorer in NHL history. Matthews is a generational scorer , there isn't really any way around it. 50-goal career pace through seven seasons, leads the league in goals since he entered the league. His 5v5 production and efficiency is unparalleled.

Generational goal scorer… It hasn't even been close. If Matthews wore any other jersey, none of these ridiculous videos or takes would be posted. He's a special talent and doesn't get the love he deserves because people can't stand the team he plays for. Anyone taking Tage over him is flat out wrong and an idiot. Also the contract isn't even a raise from his last one. The AAV is irrelevant and people need to realize that. The cap percentage hit is what matters. This contract won't even be the highest in two years time with the cap increasing significantly. It's not a bad number at all for the Leafs
Toronto has no goaltending? Samsonov is coming off a .919 season and Woll is one of the better young goalie prospects in the NHL who looked really good with the Leafs after getting called up. Also no defence? You mean the team that has been top 10 in pretty much every defensive metric over the last three years. You're living in 2018 buddy with these old talking points. The problem for the Leafs in the playoffs has been the offence drying up which can be contributed to some bad luck and poor finishing. Defence and goaltending hasn't been the problem for years
Leafs fans always babble about cap going up, it will never help them, players there never take a long term discount, they all take more than normal and less than long term. If Matthew’s really cares about winning he would have taken 8 years last contract for 10 million. A few years ago Leafs media on NHL network said Matthews would break Gretzky’s 92 goal record lol, he missed it by 50 goals that season.
Look there is no denying that Matthews is an incredible player and an incredible goal score however that contract is outrageous. I think Adam's locking up both Thompson and cozens for what he did just shows how incredible of a GM he truly is and I am grateful that he is managing our team. Toronto has been in cap hell for years and they decide to give him a raise unbelievable
I’ve seen the interview you are referring to where Tage talks about his faith. Yes, we are incredibly lucky to have him! What a grateful person! I’d add that Tage is also far tougher than Matthews for playoff hockey. That is something we will still need to see. Tage has shown us he can absolutely flatten people or drop the gloves. I think there is a physical side to his game that will come out soon.
Tage had more goals than Matthews and total point last season. It,s a no brainer I will take Tage and save near 6000.000 dollars. Take 4 of the 6 million and pay the 4 million to Dahlin. Now I ask you Wayne who would you rather have Matthews or Tage and Dahlin

I read where Eichel was the first player to win the cup with a salary of 10M or more? Torontos model hasnt produced much in the way of playoff success, as of yet, and much to my enjoyment 😊
Cale Makar, who has the Calder, Conn Smythe, and Norris Trophies to his name, only makes $9 million AAV. So for sure Dahlin might make $10+ million AAV, but it's not unreasonable to think (and hope) he could make less. And yes, Tage is just an awesome person who has incredible perspective on life, with the birth of his son and the fact his wife battled cancer. I'm so glad he's on the Sabres.
Bingo. Just my thoughts, I'd rather have a guy who isn't greedy and puts up insane stats than someone who commanded $13m from a team that doesn't know how to manage cap space. Doesn't reflect well on Matthews when their cap is in dire straights. I just have this gut feeling and don't like Matthews on or off the ice. Just my opinion
If Tage and Matthews were making the same amount, I have to go with Matthews though i hate to say it. But he's paid almost double what Tage is making. And they're only buying 4 years of his prime. Tage all the way
With Tage and Cozens accepting below-market contracts, it sends a wrong message if we go to the max on Dahlin and Powers. Adams should (and will) promise them he will spend to the cap by 25-26 when prospects flood in. If they hold out for an extra million or two, offer them a trade to a team that can give us some premium draft picks. Adams will have that much more to spend on our budding stars that want to be here.

Ill take Tage over purse boy Matthews any day! Leafs are CRAZY for resigning Matthews ( look at his playoff stats they are BRUTAL!! ) they shouldve traded him ! They couldve got a stud D man like Jamie Drysdale Anahiem and a 1st round pick for Matthews . Leafs should build their team around Marner! He reminds me of Dave Keon, yes im OLD! Next season the laffs will have two players making more than 13 million each as you know Marner will want at least 13 million , and that doesnt include Tavares (11 million for one more year ) and Nylander….resign??

Respect to you Sabres fans, but it’s crazy how you say Matthews doesn’t show up in the playoffs. He literally carried the leafs round 1. Had a 2 goal game when they came back down from 4-1(he started that comeback). 5 goals in 6 games round 1. Yes he didn’t score in round 2, which does bother me a bit. Bobrovsky was just an animal in those playoffs, taking out Boston, Toronto and canes. Matthews does show up and if you ask most sane hockey fans they will tell you Matthews>Thompson. Tage is fantastic, but Matthews has been leading the NHL in goals since he joined the NHL. HES WORTH THE MONEY!
