[The Athletic] Ranking the top 20 Calder Trophy candidates for the 2023-24 NHL season

**8. Matthew Knies, LW, 20 (Toronto Maple Leafs — No. 57 in 2021)**

> Whether Knies is a factor in the Calder race is probably completely dependent on whether he gets the one left-wing job that appears open in the Leafs’ top six alongside some combination of Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner, John Tavares and William Nylander. Tyler Bertuzzi was signed to likely fill the first-line vacancy left by Michael Bunting alongside Matthews, but will it be Knies or Max Domi who gets to play on the Tavares line? If it’s Knies, he’s probably going to get the even-strength points needed to be in the conversation even without the power play opportunities afforded to some of the names in front of him here (there’s a zero percent chance he plays on Toronto’s PP1). If it’s Domi, PP2 time and third-line duty with Calle Järnkrok and Co. likely isn’t enough for Knies.

> The good news is that even if it’s Domi to start, Domi’s ability to play third-line center if the Leafs don’t get enough from some combination of David Kämpf, Pontus Holmberg and Dylan Gambrell (which seems likely), should open up opportunities throughout the season for Knies to jump into the top six. — Scott Wheeler

The fact that Woll still qualifies for the Calder is crazy ngl. Considering the injuries we had last year, I thought he’d have played enough for last year to be his rookie year

Pretty bad list imo. Don’t see Levi playing enough games to overcome a point per game player (there’s so much star power this year someone will hit 80 points).

The top 4 should be(no particular order):

Bedard (will have the worst lineups most likely)

Cooley (probably the best player atm)

Fantilli (will have good linemates and probably score a ton of points and be -50)

Knies (best linemates of the 4, and already has played a handful of nhl games)

I don’t see Hughes or Clarke playing in a big enough role, they put up PP points but that probably won’t be enough this year. And I don’t see Carlsson in that tier this year, specially because of the team he’s on.

A dark horse could be Stankoven replacing that 1C for Dallas, long shot but would instantly make him the favourite imo. Also, Jiricek could make a run too.
