Danton Heinen PTO raises stakes at Boston Bruins’ training camp

The Boston Bruins signed forward Danton Heinen to a professional tryout offer on Tuesday.

Heinen was traded to the Anaheim Ducks for Nick Ritchie a few years ago, and returns to the Bruins after a couple seasons with the Pittsburgh Penguins.

He’s not guaranteed to make the team, though, and will battle with Alex Chiasson (also on a PTO) and other forwards like Jesper Boqvist, Milan Lucic, Jakub Lauko, Patrick Brown and potential AHL graduates for a spot on the opening night roster.

Plus, Brad Marchand is sure talking like the next captain of the Bruins.

  1. well done Ian…as usual…love to see DH back….great pool of players to choose from,,,,now lets get JD signed before season hopefully

  2. I like this move. Very solid 2-way player with good plus/minus and decent offensive ability.
He played for Montgomery in college and certainly played well enough for the Bs. So, why not have him challenge players for a 3rd-4th line role.

Geekie, Heinen and Lucic/Lauko (as an example) wouldn't be a bad 4th line.
I'm assuming that Frederick centers the third line?
Or maybe he and Geekie flip 3rd-4th.

IMO, these veteran PTOs are a smart idea, to make sure that the younger players aren't simply handed roles – they'll need to fight for them in camp and preseason, or head back to Providence.

I'd love to see skilled players like Lysell and/or Merkulov make the jump, but they need to be NHL ready. And these veterans like Chiasson and Heinen should create real battles.
