[Mile High Hockey] Recent defensive signings around the NHL make it feel like this will be Toews last season as an Avalanche. How should the Avs handle the situation? Trade for value or roll the dice?

Yeah, I don’t know what AAV will look like, but it’s hard to imagine it’s less than $9 unless the term is 7-8 years, even then …

Toews deserves the money, but a top 4 of Manson (if healthy), Byram (if healthy) and makar (if healthy) and Girard is very solid. If you lose 1-2 of them, the avs are a fringe team.

That’s sort of the point of the cap though.

I can’t see any way Toews asks for more than Makar. 4-5 years at 7.5-8 I would hope

I don’t think we’ll be able to re-sign him, especially without some knowledge of what the cap increase is going to look like, bearing in mind that Mikko is up the following year.

That being said, I wouldn’t trade him. The window is now, and he maximizes it this season. I don’t really see how they’d get enough in return to not take a step back without him.

Yes, the very tough decision we all knew was coming.

We can keep Toews only by ‘overpaying’ (relative to our cap situation) and likely trading Girard to free up some of that money. Is it worth it if it means paying Toews until he’s 37-38?

So much seems to depend on Byram – can he actually be a fully reliable #2 behind Makar? If so, then there is a very strong argument that instead of paying Toews $9M you spread that out over 2 or 2.5 other guys. If he can’t stay healthy, then we have a problem. And, as much as I love Bo, his game still isn’t ‘there’ – he still needs some development/growth to be an anchor rather than a complementary piece.

I’ve said it here before, but I genuinely believe Toews can give solid $7.5M play until he’s 34-35. He fits our window perfectly with Nate and Mikko hitting their early 30s at that point. Not only do I think he fits the window perfect, but the cap will be up substantially in 5 years. A 7.5×7 year deal would work great for both sides and it allows Toews to remain in a spot where he’s comfortable and growing his family.

His play relies on how smart he is, not necessarily his skating ability. Someone like Makar could have a harder time prolonging their prime as they rely on their body to be in top shape to be effective. Although Toews is physically gifted it’s still his brains that set him a apart. This is why I think his prime lasts longer than we expect. Some players are able to play longer than others for different reasons.

The double sided sword here is the only way this works is Landy gets sidelined forever and remains on LTIR, or we trade Girard. I’ve said this many times also, trading Girard is not a bad thing. He’s skilled, but he belongs on a team where he can shine and be utilized as a top 2 guy. Someone will pay a handsome amount for that, whereas he is literally our 4th best offensive option at all times. I like Girard, but we have 3 studs that he will always be in the shadow of.

Don’t trade even if that means he walks. The window is open now, he’s a stud, play to get another cup this year

These are the decisions that make me happy I’ll never be a GM. That said, I don’t think you’d get the haul that really reflects his value in a trade, and the cap space for the price and term for his value is going going to be hard to manage.

At this point, roll the dice.

If he wants max dollars he will leave. If he wants to enjoy our culture and potentially win again, he will stay at a small discount.

There is not likely to be a midseason trade available that would not be a competitive step back, I dont see that avenue as likely at all.

Trade Val, use the cap space to sign Toews.

  10. Every time I doubt Sakic and C-Mac, they make a deal that makes me question why other teams GM’s haven’t blocked their number.

I so so don’t want to see Toews play anywhere else, but I’ve seen the haul our front office brings back for way less than a top pair D, let’s see what miracle they can work this time
