How SGA Showed Luka What A True Leader Is

Luka Doncic is one of the best in the world, but has he gone too far with complaining to the refs? In the FIBA World Cup 2023 quarterfinal vs. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander & Canada, the two main stars demonstrated absolutely different behaviors – one was throwing money signs to the refs and got ejected for two technicals, while the other remained calm and collected.

In this video, BasketNews’ Augustas Suliauskas analyzes if Slovenia’s complaints about bad refereeing were legit & Canada’s plan against Luka which worked in the 2nd half.

  1. As a Slovenian, I couldn't agree more with everything you said. We have to be better mentally next time.
The only important factor you missed in your analysis is the burden Luka has to carry for his own team, which is incomparable to Shai's. And these things build up, especially if you're used to winning to an extend that Luka is. But the reality is that we have players that we have and have to work with those.

  2. He’s in FIBA, fouls are hard to get. I don’t know how Luka didn’t understand that.

  3. Luka needs to grow a lot before he can properly lead the team. Instead of being the one to keep his team cool and motivate them, he's the one who argues for every touch and just pulls not just him self, but the entire team, down…

  4. Yea Luka needs to get the ref's out of his mind. We all know they suck but you can't let it be your game. Luka crying to the ref's is getting old. Grow up.

  5. I hope Luka develops the "let the game do the talking" instead of his repetitive complaints. Especially since he is a Top 5-7 player currently.

  6. I like the way these Europeans break down the game lol they’re not jus gonna be like “did Slovenia lose this game or did Canada win it?” Which is one of the phrases I hate in American sports media 😂😂

  7. Luka only wants things his way, talented but too immature no leadershil skills. He does that a lot in NBA

  8. They're 2 incredible players. But who is more stressed? The guy with nba teammates or the one who is carrying a whole team of non international level guys?
Reactions are due to the amount of stress they need to suffer in order to compete.
It doesn't surprise me Luka showing it off.

  9. As a Slovenian I am tired to watch our or dallas games. I like Luka and his playing but his complains is just absurd. It is not watchable. He is just cry baby who grows without Father. He need to change something if he want to be great

  10. You did not cover full story, just part for your wrong narrative. Refs where shit and so are you sipms.

  11. tbh…this calmness made SGA really reserved and passive in semi-finals agains serbia… he showed no passion, wasnt a true leader in that game

  12. the point is that you just can't compare a team with 5 guys being all solid nba players and a team with Luka Doncic and some perimeter shooters. In the end it just comes down to this. Slovenia just lacks option for its offence, beside Luka 1v1 or the the 3 point shot. Add a lack of effort in defense and that's it. I see no point in questioning Doncic for his behaviour with the refs… he did all he could but that wasn't enough. Frustration did the rest.

  13. Bro, you can't poison everyone's mind. Some watched the whole game. REFS ARE SERIOUSLY GOT PAID LOL. LOOK THE FOULS ON SGA IN FIRST AND THIRD QUARTER, SLIGHT HAND CHECK ITS A FOUL. Another clown

  15. Canada win the game thanks to referees. But not that easy against SERBIA SERBIA SERBIA
    (Canada plays very dirty)

  16. Yugoslavia team with their best players or America team. Like imagine: Doncic, Jokic, Micic, Bogdanovic, Vucevic, Dragic … 🤯🤯🤯

  17. Eh I think it comes down to 3 things as to why Luka was moaning so much.

    1. You were right, he got tired and was probably frustrated at the lack of support from his team. It probably puts him in a "him against the world mindset" and so when he gets a call against him, which does happen in games, he feels that the refs are also against him.

    2. He's too use to the NBA. In the NBA I feel he would often get a lot of these calls, but in FIBA, they tend to allow more contact and want the game to flow more. Luka has probably gotten so use to those calls being given, that he was getting frustrated that the tricks he normally use weren't working in this competition.

    3. He often takes inspiration from Football and more specifically Real Madrid. A bit more of a stretch, but in football, you can sometimes convince the ref to agree with you and give you the fouls if you play it off right and complain to the ref enough to give them reasonable doubt, Real Madrid do this a lot and often get favourable treatment from the ref, so I wouldn't be surprised if this culture has rubbed off on him.
At least football is now clamping down on this more.

I do think it's unfair to say that Shaii was a better leader as he does have a better quality team around him. I think nearly every player put in Luka's position would probably act the same way. It can be quite hard when you have to shoulder your whole countries ambitions on you back, especially when you are so use to a culture of winning. When you don't have the support around you and you can see your team mates making silly mistakes, it's bound to weigh on you.

  18. He is just spoiled brat, but we can't forget that he is Real Madrid's child, complaining about the referees is the first thing they learn in RM school 😊

  19. I think the main problem with this Slovenia team is that their "true leader" as you put it was Goran Dragić. A put your head down and grind all game long type of player. Since Goran is gone, there is no "true leader". Luka is by far the best player, but he needs a veteran next to him to keep him in check. The coach has zero authority. In the past, when Luka started complaining about refereeing Goran would shut him down immediately. I'm afraid Slovenia has already achieved everything they ever would with Luka. Sure, Čančar was missing, but Slovenia just doesn't have enough quality to put around Luka to be able to make it to the top 4.

  20. He is like this every game. Unfortunately too many fan boys won’t accept it, the nba referees don’t like to upset superstar players so give them the calls and the NBA wants the best players winning the most games so it won’t change anything.

  21. I think luka is a good example of why the best player on the team doesn't have to be the best leader in the team

  22. Leading a team full of nba players and leading a team full of eurocup players aint the same

  23. How is y’all putting out 4 videos about that topic when y’all could’ve made a video about Serbia-Canada or Germany-USA? It’s getting ridiculous with y’all

  24. Luka MUST learn to "STFU & GBOD" (Get Back on D). There need to billboards with this all over Dallas. They need to be shouting at him from the coaching to the ownership to SHUT THE F UP AND GET BACK ON D!!!!!!!!! STFU—>GBOD. The simple formula to turn Luka into a legend.

  25. Now i don't think chill is the right word who did this post SGA is out of the finals ,eliminated by Jokic less Serbia !

  26. Luka needs to emulate Jokic. (Or Shai ….) Jokic will complain on some bad calls but not on EVERY call. And Jokic always stays calm. Most people accept that Nikola is now the best player in the world as he dominated the NBA playoffs. Unlike Luka, Jokic always makes an effort on defense — and his defense is much better than people give him credit for. Nikola is two time MVP and an NBA champion so worth paying attention to how he succeeded as an unheralded player entering the NBA.
Luka needs to calm down, focus on the game, stop complaining non-stop, and at least make an effort to move without the ball and play defense.
I thought Luka's defense and composure would improve after a few years in the NBA but they might be getting worse.
