Today we’re talking about the idea of trading Winnipeg Jets forward Patrik Laine in exchange for Columbus Blue Jackets defenceman Zach Werenski. It’s brought upon us by Ken Wiebe’s most recent Winnipeg Jets mailbag, wherein he discusses how, in his opinion, the idea probably isn’t likely to come to fruition.

  1. Unless you're sending a 50 goal scorer the other way Laine isn't going anywhere. Everyone wants the Porsche until they see the price tag.

  2. Laine with either Domi or Dubois as his center would definitely gain cult status. Panarin and Bob are still loved here but Rick Nash might forever be the GOAT in CBus.

  3. I don't see Laine agreeing to sign long term with Columbus because its not his kind of Market, and tbh if im trying to leave Winnipeg, it definitely isnt for Columbus and thats no disrespect its just logic based on where he is at in his life, with that being said if i'm columbus i don't want to waste money on a guy who may or may not want to be there especially giving up an elite D like Werenski, pretty sure Peg is gonna sell him for whatever they can get and watch him walk away or by some miracle Laine has a great year with Statsny and stays but even then….you're talking about 36 year old Statsny and not to mention Wheeler is also on the wrong side of 30

Honestly I dunno how the Jets can possibly keep Laine at this point they are in an absolute shitty position.

  4. Laine =
    – a top d-man
    – your best prospect
    – An NHL caliber forward that can at least put up 30+ goals.

For people who are thinking Laine is not that good here are his goal scoring seasons so far if he played 82 every year:
Season 1: 40 (4th in the league, led the Jets in goals)
Season 2: 44 (4th in the league, led the Jets in Goals)
Season 3: 30 (52nd in the league, 3rd in the Jets by Goals)
Season 4: 34 (24th in the league, 2nd in Jet by Goals)

Yes seaons 3 and 4 were a couple of down years but that is because he was moved all around the line up, if Laine is played on one line the entire season he is easily is a 40+ goal scorer.

  5. First let me say Winnepeg will NOT get a top D-man on a solid contract for Laine. Especially when these teams can wait snd offer sheet him!Or wait a little longer until he hits Free agency. The wildcard in this situation that's never mentioned is that The Flyers, Columbus, Carolina, etc. AREN'T having issues signing their top RFAs. They are alresdy signed on bargain contracts. Winnipeg is. No one is going to give up a Werenski or a Provorov for a possible 50 goal scorer who has a year left on his contract/3 yrs left as an RFA without an extension… Who also has possible team effort and locker room issues. The Jets will jave to bite the bullet and take a package of a top4 Dman (Not top 2) and some good prospects and picks. The longer they wait the smaller their package gets and (Like Trouba) the closer they are to losing Laine to an offer sheet or via free agency for nothing.

  6. Zach Werenski is worth far more then Patrik Laine, Besides screw Winnipeg Werenski is coming home to Detroit in 3 years he's stated numerous times on Twitter his desire to play with his buddy Dylan Larkin home in Detroit.

  7. laine for werenski? if i'm winnipeg i take this deal. i think the jackets would be foolish to offer it though. werenski is exactly the type of player winnipeg needs. but columbus could just sign hoffman and keep ZW.
