On August 23, 2023. The Toronto Maple Leafs Extended Star forward Austin Mathews to an 4-year contract worth $13,250,000 AAV. While Toronto keeping their Star on the team for at least 4 more years is overall a good thing. It did make me think that with their current cap issues, That it would’ve been a better idea to sign him to a much longer term deal originally, meaning they would’ve only had to take the $11,000,000 cap hit for three more years of Mathews prime allowing the cap to go up more and therefore allowing them to keep Mathews and some others signed and have more depth in the long run. That’s what I discuss today and what it means for Toronto in the long run and if they can sustain it in the future.
