Aussie Legends: Jeff Thomson

Jeff Thomson’s unique action and outrageous pace made him arguably the most fearsome fast bowler in history, securing him a spot in Australian cricket’s Hall of Fame

  1. I will never forget the 1974-75 Ashes 2nd test at Perth. A 13 year old Australian girl fell in love with cricket. My brother was at the first test in Brisbane. Fantastic series. Ian Redpath and Doug Walters my heroes as well.

  2. Much praise has been posted on him here but his record suggest otherwise which is quite below par

  3. He was a great bowler, but I will not fall for that bandwagon that he was the fastest to ever play cricket. There were no reliable speed guns then so there is no proof. Helmets were rare and the terror of fast bowlers of 1970s and 1980s no longer exists today.

  4. Not one of these highlights were from the mid 70s when he was the fastest ever. A very poor selection of Thomson highlights.

  5. Thommo was measured at 100 mph at the bastman's end…after it had bounced and travelled the full length of the pitch. All modern "fast bowlers" ie Shoaib, Lee, Tait, Hayward etc have been measured from within 1.5m of releasing the ball – so only a very short distance out of their hand. This means that Thommo was at minimum, 10% faster than anything we've seen since him.

When Thommo was playing there were no ropes – just the fence. On more than one occasion, he sent the ball past the batsman's throat, over Marsh's head and it bounced once before it hit the sight-screen. Have you ever seen that on genuinely large grounds, from any modern so-called express bowler?? Thommo and Holding at his peak were well above what we see today… If a player as great as Barry Richards is scared if you…then that says it all…

  6. Big loss to cricket that Barry Richards didn't face Jeff Thomson in a Test when they were both at their peak.

  7. The amazing Thomson would also return the ball from the boundary with that bowling action with great accuracy and speed. No one else could do that. He was even more menacing to a batsman than the great West Indian fast bowlers.

  8. Amazing , he did not have to slow ball to trick the batsman. Every ball was lethal and bullet .

  9. I believe the best way to ascertain how fast a bowler was, is to ask the batters who faced them.

  10. intro music sound effect and commentary voice was awesome its feels like intro of action hero ❤‍🔥❤‍🔥❤‍🔥

  11. Why does this actually not look THAT quick? Keeper is not stood as far back as you would expect from a bowler “consistently around 160kmh”

  12. The thing that made Thommo's bowling so vicious was not just the speed, but the incredible lift from good length balls.

  13. The Australian Legend Ritchie Benaud who faced Typhoon said Tyson was that bit faster. The footage indicates that his trajectory/traction was the case.. At least Tommo was trying

  14. His action is slow but ball is shooting like bullet. That's genuine pacer.

  15. Thommo was extraordinarily flexible; his entire body, very fluid in all motion not just bowling. Bio-mechanically speaking, because he bowled with a single plane rotation (similar to the golf swing analysis) and kept the ball in his hand longer than most bowling actions during the "wind-up" before release, he generated more pace and more backspin on the ball. His speed was measured at around 150km/h at the striker's end… NOT out of the hand like today's speed measurements. Some people say it's a javelin throwing action…it is absolutely NOT a javelin action.
