Fair Trade? Red Wings Swap Vili Saarijarvi for Eric Comrie

The Detroit Red Wings have made more roster moves this season than anyone anticipated. Most recently, Detroit decided to trade 2015 73rd overall pick Vili Saarijarvi to the Arizona Coyotes in exchange for goaltender, Eric Comrie.

Its no secret Detroit needs goaltenders – but was this a fair trade? Saarijarvi, currently in his 3rd season as a pro was sent packing in his final season of his entry level developmental contract. Eric Comrie on the other hand, is currently in his 6th season as a pro with a 2.82 GAA AHL average.

Was this a fair trade? Should Detroit have released a valuable developing defenseman to in order to get an goaltender with little NHL experience?

  1. @Access Hockey MI I agree a 100%. I’m hoping this goalie situation is a blessing in disguise. Howard gets hurt around this time through February for the past 5 years. I’m hoping Comire /Bernier catch lightning in a bottle like Binnington/Allen did for the Blues last year. As a former goalie confidence and belief from your team and coaches are key in this working. Losing Vili isn’t a big deal it’s starting to become the norm of draft picks getting delt for a change of scenery i.e Perlini and Fabbry, hopefully we can get a positive out of this whole situation. Complete long shot and probably not in reality, I’d call Florida and see what the price is on Spencer Knight knowing you got Bob for 8 years!

  2. Detroit already had a log jam of defenseman in the AHL and Vili appears to be a bust compared to what expectations of his development were.

Clears 1 body from the log jam and adds a goalie with potential into the organization.

Before either of them play a single game, its a draw to minor win for the Wings. Now depending how well Comrie can play, it could turn out to be a big win in the long term.

Who knows, maybe Vili will finally find his offensive game. Wish him all the best.
