I agree with you 100% that fans should be considering % of the cap space. That being said, if I was McDavid and just finished a $100,000,000 contract, I’d seriously just consider my next contract stay the same rate or drop to $10,000,000 per year in order to help bring in a couple more depth pieces to the roster. So long as I’ve managed my funds well, there really is no need for more than what I would have already made. The kind of money he has made up until the end of this contract is enough to sustain his family for like the next 3 generations. By shaving a little off the top, he could drastically improve his chances of getting his name engraved on the cup.
But, of course, whatever his decision will be, I will happily respect and understand it. 👍🏻
The idea that a few million more in cap space is going to make for a cup run is ludicrous, and a poor incentive for a superstar to accept less money- especially when it means staying in Edmonton.
Connor McDavid is today's best all-around player. Comparing him to Michael Jordan who didn't win a Championship until his 7th year. Throughout the 1980's, he was criticized for not winning early in his career. Then, he built his legacy winning 6 out of 8 rings in the 1990's. McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers need to start collecting chips as soon as possible. This is obviously what they are trying to do. Hopefully, it will come sooner than later. I'm always cheering for McDavid, even though I'm from Northern Ontario.
Hockey is big business, Oilers fans are lucky he's not playing in Florida , but probably next contract if he's smart .
most boring videos ever with the same title each time. anything for views
Oilers should trade him while they can still get something for him
Don’t forget, he’s a union member. Taking a severe discount affects pay scale for other union members.
I have said it and I’ll say it again unless Edmonton Drastically improves their Defense, Goaltending, and lack of scoring depth McDavid will not win a cup there no matter how hard he and Draisaitl try.
give me 1 year at 5 mill and ill play the rest of my career for a dollar
McDavid already took a discount with his current contract. I'd have given him partial ownership of the team if I was the owner. 😂
Absolute nonsense. High salaries are killing the league due to the cap. No one player can win the cup. I agree superstars sell tickets so there needs to be another way to compensate them. Every team benefits from this small group of players so why are their teams expected to foot the whole cost. Possibly with awards of 1-2mil for being the best that year instead of just a trophy. These guys also get a chance to make even more money outside of hockey so I do not buy the idea that they are worth the equivalence of 13 of their fellow team mates. The guys who only get a short career need it more. Raise the minimum contract from 1% to 2% of the cap would put down ward pressure on the overpaid. How many of these superstar at 10 mil actually earn that money. Maybe half? Half of their salaries should be bonuses performance based.
People are delusional, McDavid could ask for league maximum and 75% of the league would line up to sign him because of the skill set he has but also the revenue he would generate would be a significant ROI on what his yearly salary is. Yeah he is an amazing player but sometimes teams have to look at it from business perspective too, a cup would be nice but increasing revenue year over year is also pretty nice.
Look I’m an oilers fan taking a discount would help the team but he’s earned that money and deserves to be paid. What he dose with his money is none of our business. You can’t look at his house and say he has all this money he can take a discount. No that’s not how this works.
I get both sides of this argument
if he wants to have the best chances to win a cup then he should probably take a pay cut so the team could get some more talent but I also understand taking what you are worth or what you can get
like I don't blame McDavid for taking every penny he can get but then I also don't have much sympathy when he looks upset after getting eliminated from the playoffs
Fix. The. Defense. I don't care how dominant McDavid and Draisaitl are. Edmonton's not winning anything with that AHL defense core they're running.
no way , let the man get the bag 💰 bro sacked his youth for the future and now he's reaping 👏👏
I've said this to alot of people before, if I was a cupless superstar I'd sign league minimum for 1 year with the best overall team in the league to win a cup then go back to my old team and keep grinding.
Do I think it's realistic? No.
I think everyone forgets about the NHLPA, the union would be absolutely furious. Him taking pay cuts also screws over other NHL players. Say he takes $10 million, now when a player who would’ve gotten 10 now gets negotiated down because you can’t make more than McDavid. He has to think about his fellow players as well. This is his job I wouldn’t expect anybody else to take a pay cut at their job so their company can put together a better work force.
McDavid should be looking at playing defense and learning to backcheck if he wants to win
your quickly becoming one of my favorite hockey content creators by far, videos are always good 👍 keep up the success 🙌
Especially leaf fans
As an Oiler fan that is the most absurd statement I've heard in a long time. Pay the man what he is worth.
Delusional is exactly the right descriptor!
You imagine if he did though? Don't even think it would be allowed, The players association would veto it… And obviously there would be some sort of fraud investigation of getting paid under the table
Its funny comparing the money between the NHL and how 16 mil is crazy vs the NFL or NBA where you get some backups making that amount
I could see him taking a bit of a discount but league minimum is absolutely insane lol
Mcdqvid is not the best in the world not anywhere near the best
I did the numbers and Connor Mcdavid took almost 16% of the team cap and Crosby took 13.5%. Also keep in mind Mcdavid's contract is during his prime year and Crosby's contract ends when he's 37. That being said Crosby is still easily worth 8.7 mil, just like Mcdavid is easily worth 12.5 mil. So I think both teams got a fair deal
What people don't get is if a player like McDavid actually signs a league minimum contract, when they're gone and retired or traded, you have no cap space to replace them. Not that you could replace a guy like him but look at the Bruins. I think Bergeron retiring only freed up like 1 mil. Now the Bruins have a Bergeron sized hole in their center lineup and 1 mil to do something about it. When Crosby and Malkin retire, the Pens will have to rebuild, but they'll at least have quite a bit of cap space to do it.
Bro who tf thinks he will take league min😂😂😂😂😂. I'm a oilers fan but like 775k????? Nah. A discount for McDavids next contract is like 14mil x 8 years.
Edit: If caps going up 4mil for at least the next 2 seasons…14mil is fine.
I hope he’ll be willing to take some sort of discount to help the team. But league minimum is fucking crazy that’s never gonna happen people who think that it is are simply delusional
The best player in the league should make the most money
I only gotz one thing to say about McDavid (and his pay / compensation): "Pay that MAN his Money!"

McDavid is actually pretty overrated if you think about it
The fact that any oilers fan could complain to any cont he takes to see him play is crazy. I would pay 30m to see the future GOAT on my team.
he isn't the best player in the world, he's a 1 dimensional player, might as well have karlsson or subban on his jersey, another 1 trick pony (don't get too excited Kane, you can't bet on this one either), it's a good thing he can score if and when that dries up he is going to be shown for what he is, a huge defensive liability. also if you want to know how 100m is more than he could spend, did you see the blond beside him with the house she designed and the view of the empty field….
McDavid deserves the money he got
