bro it’s always wild to me how angry people get about showing a gesture of good faith towards a community that, historically, the hockey community has been extremely unwelcoming and toxic toward.
Edit: much love to all my non cis and hetero hockey brethren. I see you

Just like any Reddit thread there’s no room for nuance in the comments. Downvote me to oblivion but I’ll play devil’s advocate anyways.
I don’t want my employer pushing me to show support for positions, groups or political positions. Even one I agree with. I want my employer to stay out of my personal business in every way possible. I’ll grant that being a pro athlete you give away some privacy, but I can understand players pushing to keep the NHL neutral.

I’d have to agree, and here’s why:
This isn’t about being against anything. It’s more of an issue of making everyone an activist.
Last year, you had people that were crucified because they chose to not want to be activists, and it really hurts everyone for two reasons.
1. It’s perfectly reasonable to say “no, I don’t want to wear a rainbow jersey”. Like it’s perfectly reasonable to not wear a poppy on veterans/Remembrance Day. Or to not want to have specific stickers etc. . Players should not be expected to be activists. That’s not their job. They have the right to not express something if they don’t want to. “Wear the dang jersey” makes you sound really bad.
2. It takes away not just from the night, and the people the night is for, but the controversy takes away from the NHL itself. Regardless of what side you were on, it was a political issue, and it’s one both the NHL and sports in general could do without.
Not even for or against thing, it’s simply a smart decision for the sport to just do away with those jerseys being worn. And they did exactly what people said on here by getting rid of them.
I absolutely support the decision of the NHL to remove the wearing of special practice jerseys.

He’s the last guy that should be talking about political pressure. If Panarin had said that, maybe I’d actually respect that opinion.

I’m gay and to be totally honest, I don’t feel like the NHL needs to pander to me or people like me with these orchestrated events. I’m well aware sports are mostly enjoyed by straight men but I don’t feel in any way I’m not allowed to enjoy hockey because of my orientation. It’s completely irrelevant. I love the sport and always will regardless of who the majority of the fans are.
I feel to “welcome everyone,” players can do outreach to certain groups *if they want* and the rest will fall in place. I know forcing pride jerseys on players may make some of them uncomfortable so it defeats the purpose and feels very disingenuous to me. I don’t discuss my personal life on that level with many folks, I don’t feel the need to share it with the world on a particular day/week/month etc. I think as long as my rights are protected at a federal level, I’m not being actively persecuted by the gov’t or my community I live in, there is no reason to try and force acceptance especially if there might be substantial pushback.
I think having a great openly gay player who doesn’t make their sexuality their complete identity and is not paraded out like a puppet during a particular time of the year to give their “gay” opinion on things is more powerful than anything, and I’m hopeful that happens in my lifetime. I just worry it is unlikely because gay men tend not to play team sports and popular culture constantly tells them to be a caricature of what a gay man is, and sports are “not for them” rather than be true to themselves. I love hockey, going to games, grew up playing and going to death/prog. metal shows, and did karate at a competitive level for several years. Nobody can tell me what to like and that’s all that matters in my opinion. My orientation is one of the least interesting things about me. Be yourself and everything will be good! You can’t please everyone all the time and shouldn’t feel the need to try to do so.
