[Hall] Danny Briere said players shouldn’t think about rebuild in locker room. They want players to think about winning, developing. Briere said Flyers are not tanking or trying to lose.

Some people won’t be happy to hear this.

People need to realize that even teams intentionally tanking don’t tell players or coaches to go out and lose. They might be very happy with the results of a loss, but players/coaches never go out trying to lose. Anaheim didn’t go out and play the worst hockey in the league intentionally, they just knew that their team was not good enough to have any success and was happy with that outcome (And traded those that were good that didn’t fit their timeline away).

The thing to be more concerned about through rebuilds is organizations making win now moves (Signing big free agents, trading picks away, playing vets above rookies). So Briere saying that players should think about winning like this is a nothing statement. Of course players will go out and try to win, because that’s what they are paid for (Trying to lose for a tanking team does not help them sign a better second contract).

It’s the right approach. The rebuild is done by the front office, not the guys on the ice. We don’t necessarily need to do the full-on teardown like the Blackhawks to have a successful rebuild.

What we need to do is sell at the deadline to get some more good assets, not make roster moves to try to improve the on-ice performance by plugging holes with useless veteran players, and weaponize our cap space as it becomes available.

I hope the players on the ice play hard every night, I just hope that the front office is committed to the long-term rebuild and won’t get tempted to try to be a playoff team if this group overperforms a bit.
