  1. Of course it was. They had to get under the cap. Having a veteran back up is pretty important, but fundamentally, if they couldn't get under the cap, they'd have to start the season a roster player short. Clearly, trading Myers, Garland or another player wasn't an option. Obviously, trading another draft pick wasn't great, but again, they couldn't start the season 1 roster player short if they have any hope of making the playoffs, and that seems to be the goal every year for the past decade, long term consequences be damned. I don't see this team becoming a contender until the team is sold to another ownership group, so come what may. If Pettersson ends up leaving as a UFA or the Canucks manage to move him first, I'll feign surprise.
