  1. It's not weird. It's a negotiation tactic. Nylander is touting his high value, and we all know centers are worth more than wingers. I bet both sides agreed to this and, the team has probably said, show us what you can do in the position we drafted you in, which has more value to us. Try him at center, and when you can show him he cannot do it and have to move him back to the wing, you have a proven point that he's not as valuable. Or, he kicks ass as a center and you pay him as a second line top tier center, and you move on from Tavares.

  2. Tavares injury history, and he’s not getting younger. He was never fast, and would be a great teacher.
    Feels like Tavares insurance

  3. hard to say that in the limited time that Nylander has played as a center that "he cant do it". AND playing as a winger is is different but nothings saying that because he does it well that he cannot do anything else. BUT i would say that his recent move to center is more to do with a team looking to trade for him wondering if it is possible. your estimation of him is hardly of any value.

  4. I truly don't believe this would be a story in any other market except for maybe MTL if they were a contender.

  5. This is all about the contract, if his stats in December are similar to what he did last year it gives him more leverage in negotiations. However if you move him to a position he hasn't played on years, drop him down to the 3rd line with less skilled players and less ice time it will make it much harder for him to maintain (or improve) from last years Stat line, lowering his negotiating leverage. Basically I think Toronto is playing games with the only one of the " core 4" that actually shows up during the playoffs, if I were Chilly-Willy I would be livid, but I'm a habs fan, so this pleases me.

  6. Nylander will not be a 3rd line cehter. He will be the center of the 2nd line with Tavares and Knies as the wingers.

  7. My trade offer of Hanifin for Nylander stands. I might throw in a pick too if you're lucky

  8. The thing everyone (myself included at one point) needs to understand is that its not a definite thing, its a test its weird for sure but its not set in stone for this coming season

  9. Ok but look it could put up his trade value plus I liked Steve Dangles quote on it saying if it works it’ll work too start in training camp not in a game five elimination game vs Columbus

  10. Your point is well taken. The whole thing is to enhance the entertainment effect because the Leafs are not built to play hockey but to entertain the fans. They are after all owned by an entertainment company.

  11. They haven't really tried. The bulk of attempting to put him at centre was during the playoffs after the Tavares Injury. They haven't actually gave him a true shot and let him get comfortable playing that position. It's probably not going to work, however this is the time of year to try theses things out.

  12. Part of the issue with Willy playing C in the past is they randomly throw it in once the season is already rolling. Asking him to do that out of nowhere with no practice for it at training camp is why it's failed for years. With this, one way or another, we will know if he can do it with the expectations in place from day one. If it works, great – if it doesn't, so be it. But this will set in stone the answer that we've never really gotten, which is can this work if he's actually given a fair shot and not just had it thrust upon him halfway through the season or in an ELIMINATION GAME.

  13. These are the things you do when you have an aging 2C making 10+ mil who was never fleet of foot to begin with.
They gotta give it a go, I don’t think it will work either. His face off ability and defensive ability simply haven’t been strong enough.

  14. Sounds to me like a accountability position, sink or swim for the negotiation table.

  15. If they put him as a centre does that mean Tavares moves to the wing? Or does one of them move to the 3rd line?

  16. It's funny that yoiu compared Toronto reporters to sharks, because the Toronto reports could probably beat The Sharks this season. My home team is gonna get rained on this year 🙁

  17. imo it’s smart, It’s at training camp if willy can end up being a decent C for depth itd work out. Last yr and the yr before they put him at 3C at certain times and it worked out more than it didn’t.

  18. They have already done this and it has never gone well. Nylander just carries the puck over the line, never uses his teammates and gets eaten alive as he just runs at the D. The only possibly interesting thing here is that maybe the leafs don't like their forward group and think they are weak up the middle and are desperate for another C.

  19. this is a waste of time? but you made a video about it? THIS THIS THIS THIS I love the word THIS

  20. Murray being out they might wanna try him out as a backup goalie as well.

  21. I think they just want him to improve at C so when tavares gets booted out of the circle by a ref he could step in.

  22. I think they might be telling him they need more from him as a player and they know he has more to give. He only seems to turn it on when he wants to and the Leafs want him to play at a high level all the time and work harder for the puck and not give up on it so easily. Being a center you have more responsibility so it might come down to sending him the message about work ethic before they move him back to the wing

  23. I hope bighead asks for $12,000,000 so we can finally get rid of him. We should have let him walk last contract time

  24. Because JT’s foot-speed is making it so he can’t be a centre for much longer. Also it’s training camp, why not.

  25. Centre needs to know how to play defensivley and want to backcheck. Willy never has shown much enthusiasm for any kind of backcheck or defensive play. My prediction, it doesnt make it past the first week of regular season.

  26. Nylander is a winger. One of his weaknesses is his two-way play, or lack thereof. He doesn't have the same capability at both ends of the ice, which a player needs to be an effective center.

  27. Meh worth a shot, remember when they tried JVR at center for a game? He sucked.

  28. More acceptable for the Leafs to pay him over 10 mill. to play #2 center than right wing. If he can’t play at that position, which the Leafs know he can’t he’s got to accept 9 to 9.5 mil. Or he’s gone.

  29. While I agree this is weird, the video talks as though this his been tried a lot and failed a lot. That’s just not the case. Nylander has been tried at Center a handful of times. It was way too small of a sample size to call it a failure.

But with that said, I don’t quite understand it either, but that doesn’t mean it can’t/won’t work if he gives a solid, realistic go at it…

I just don’t see him fully adapting to the responsibility that is the Center position.

Anyways, it’s a test and the leaf market is blowing this test out of the water, as per usual, is par for the course.

  30. Johnny I love the channel but can you keep the clickbait titles to the thumbnails and not the titles?

  31. He wants 10 million this is his chance to earn it without any doubts otherwise it’s time for Willy to start packing the bags
