Cale Makar interference on Jared McCann – Tough Call Suspension Recommendation

Cale Makar delivered a very late, violent hit on an unsuspecting player who was ineligible to be hit at all.

*NOTE: I don’t try to predict what the actual NHL will do. My channel is based on what I would do as the DOPS of my own league, and why.

  1. Stop it. He didn't know where the puck was and the whistle didn't blow. He saw McCann going to the corner thinking the puck was going there to be played. Call it a bad assumption but it wasn't dirty. This is the same guy who waived off a penalty earlier in the season because he knew it was nonsense. It sucks McCann got hurt but it happens that like sometimes.

  2. I thought a lot of the force was just from the momentum of both guys, lifting McCann off his feet. I didn't see the arm push as very violent. Just that kind where you know you can put the guy up on the boards and down, but it's actually not so hard. That said, there is no reason to make any kind of contact with McCann at that point–except frustration or whatever. And that's not a good reason. Nothing to do with hockey. Suspension would send a message to players that you don't touch unsuspecting players who have no reason to expect a hit. Of course, you couldn't give six in today's context. But in a reimagined system like Tough Call's, sure. No place for that.

  3. Totally agree it should be 6 games. A complete cheap shot. McCann was defenseless and not expecting the late hit regardless when the whistle blew. The play is over. Sad thing is they’ll take it easy on Makar and he won’t get close to 6 if anything at all.

  4. McCann had definitely stopped playing like he knew the play was dead he looks like he’s looking up like he knows it hit the net then gets hit while not protecting himself… makar should get a few games for this as a dangerous hit against the boards

  5. Makar barely breathed on McCann. As a player you have to take some responsibility for staying on your feet after post play bumps and brushes. That's a joke that there's a suspension. McCann just fell down like a 6 yr old first-time skater.

  6. This is nothing compared to Ryan Hartman hit on Ehlers, and he only got one game so I don’t see this being a big one. And Ehlers hasn’t even played since. I also think Bunting hit was way worse, because both were true dirty plays outside of just interference.

  7. Explain to me how this is a suspension but that McDavid boarding on Anderson was not? Anderson was out 6 games because of the "Violent" boarding penalty.

  8. Please watch the 1st three games the Avs were sick and tired of the late hits and sticks after the whistle, and this was just a interference call nothing more BUT if Seattle wants to start all the late hits the Avs will finish them

  9. Im going to have to say it was intentional, after the shot he shoves him, then locks his eyes on him and goes straight for him not even trying to assess if the puck is close to McCann or even in play. That was pre meditated and he was going to throw that hit no matter what. Completely unacceptable. Also considering what Bunting got which was on the same level as this Makar should have got 3 games.

  10. Ouch.. that may be the roughest one of the playoffs entirely so far..

  11. This reminds me of Scheifele on Evans a few years ago in the playoffs. I think that one was a bit worse, and Scheifele got 4 games. This is the crap that ads nothing to the game

  12. I think because he didn’t hear the whistle and knew the puck was going towards that side of the ice and with the speed of the puck going up with no whistle,he assumed the puck was coming towards them and since McCann had seen it go out he quit playing making him as loose as possible. So when Makar put him into the boards he had zero resistance which made the hit look worse since Makar would expect resistance. I believe the ref is slightly at fault for not blowing the whistle as soon as it hit the mesh cause Makar probably wouldn’t have went with him into the corner like that if he heard it go.

  13. When did the game get so soft? Remember when Scott Stevens almost killed Paul Kariya? That wasn't even a penalty. I hate the Avalanche and Makar, but cmon, that's a playoff check.

  14. Makar has no clue where the puck is. At different moments you can see him looking at McCann to see where he’s looking. Without the whistle blowing he keeps playing as if McCann is skating to where the puck is and plays the body.

Unfortunate situation for sure. Interference penalty, absolutely. A suspension? No.
We’ve seen worse hits go without discipline. Hell, they weren’t even going to call a penalty until McCan was hurt.

So NHL needs to figure out what they care about. Right now no one knows. Dumba’s hit was more predatory than this and got nothing.

This was shoulder to shoulder, and during play, the puck just wasn’t there.

If the puck dropped at their feet, this wouldn’t have even been a penalty. It’s only a suspension because McCann got hurt. That’s not how this should be handled.

Hell, look at Girard and his broken sternum last year, that hit was far worse than this… not even a penalty

Jeff Carter straight up concussed Makar…Elbow to the head… no penalty

Figure it out NHL. Suspend for injury or intent… stop making it up as we go

  15. The first time I saw this I said oooof!

From what I see Makar is known to be classy and skilled.

This is a completely dirty hit and I think Makar lost his mind for a moment. I can understand that.
It looks terrible no matter what. He knew what he was doing.

Note the shoulder contact a second before he finishes the check. If he hit him there, it is still a tad late but okay…..

We know what happened now but I think 5 + misconduct + 2 games would be kind of a minimum?

Decent guy, I guess, but that is dirty dirty dirty.
