Let’s Talk: Is Lassi Thomson Ready To Be A Top Four Defenseman?

With NHL training camps and preseason kicking off in a couple of weeks, Ottawa still has not acquired their long sought-after top-four defenseman. Because of this, it’s time to look at potential internal options to fill the role. So Let’s Talk, is Lassi Thomson ready to be a top-four defenseman in the NHL?

  1. Certainly has the offensive potential to be one.
Great shot, first pass for transitions and really good skating. If he improves his defence (which is still not bad) he can certainly be a good reliable top 4 D in the future

  2. Great video as always! Juste like said, I think zub should be on the second pairing with sanderson but I don't know if lassi is ready to be on the first pairing.. I think zaistev will be Chabot partner sooner or later unfortunately since I doubt we bench him with his contract.

  3. I believe he is ready for the NHL, he is like Chychrun a bit,he is scoring defenceman, skates down the ice ready well ,if I was GM I would trade for picks for 2023 draft trade Zeitsev that way

  4. Zub and Chabot play well as a pair, there is no sense in changing that.Lassi Thomson as a third pairing in a couple of years he will be a top 4,he is not there yet.LassiThomson and a vet to help.
A second pairing journeyman is what they are looking for like Seth Jones or Connor Murphy or Luke Schenn
    Chykrun is too much

  5. I think he's NHL ready the thing that impressed me the most about Lassi was his ability to defend opposing teams players on the rush he kept his feet moving well while keeping am active stick which made him effective and not take those holding penalties that we see other Sens defenders take often when they get burned

  6. I think he's ready, but maybe one year as a 5-6 guy. Call me crazy, but Hamonic is only 32 and will be playing for his next contract. Unless there's a trade or a training camp surprise, Hamonic might be our best option to play with Sanderson, and he might actually be decent.

  7. Talk about Sanderson too he should be ready to play this upcoming season for us, and apparently he was a top defenseman in his league so I think he might be a top 4 d as well

  8. I think Thompson and Sanderson are both ready… The only thing holding them back will be DJ Smith and his love of veteran players. If the senator struggle early on we may see a new coach before Christmas. I think it’s quite possible both Thompson and Sanderson are playing significant top four minutes by the end of the year. Sanderson playing top four minutes before Christmas. Sanderson Thompson combo would be sick going forward

  9. Looking forward to seeing how the young D's do… but I'm a bit worried that we are one injury away (if Chabot gets hurt) from being an AHL team purely due to defense, or we are one trade away (any good NHL D) from being a wildcard contender if most people stay healthy.

  10. If he isn't ready now, the expectation should be that both he and jbd are ready to take that step next year, after getting a few games this year.
I'm not convinced we bring in a fa Rd this year…

  11. Jake Sanderson last played in mid March. ( UND playoff game) when he was injured. So it's more like 6 moths than a year since he's played.

  12. I honestly think both JBD and Thomson spend 1 more year in Belleville. Holden and Hamonic's contracts expire at seasons end. I think one of them make the roster next season, and the other the season after. As good as both are, the battle isn't between JBD and Thomson. It's Hamonic vs Holden. One gets a 1 year deal, or 2 year deal, depending if Sens camp think the other is ready, and other walks. I honestly think, for cap reasons, Hamonic walks to re-sign Debrincat long term, and one of the kids make it next year…then it's a battle of JBD v Thomson. Till then, Sens need to focus also on the cap and make it work, so one more year for both in the minors help the kids, while the staff focus on which veteran they want to re-sign and who walks.

  13. Lassi looked good in his stint in ottawa. More ready than JBD. Hopefully in a year’s time they’ll both be in the NHL, but for now there’s no rush, with Hamonic, zaitsev and branstrom all on the books the right side is pretty full. Now if they can offload Zaitsev for cheap it’s a different story, but I’m not one of those sens fans who’s saying trade zaitsev at all costs. The price has to be right. Bury him in the minors if anything.
