The Canucks could have made this a bit less embarrassing with the addition of 2-3 depth roster players, like they used to do, when Vancouver regularly iced a largely non-roster team for exhibition games and feel less shame afterwards. I had my girlfriend once spend hundreds of dollars to surprise me with preseason game tickets, with Eriksson and Jordie Benn as the only NHL regulars. I felt bad for her because of the amount of money she spent she could have gotten regular season tickets for a good game or paid for a much better experience doing something else, but I appreciated the sentiment. She kind of expected that when the ticket says Vancouver Canucks that there would be more than two depth Vancouver Canucks players out on the ice.
Glad Vancouver won all those meaningless games down the stretch last season. Building up that team culture was the reason they only lost 10 nothing that game!
For the risk of injury during preseason, that perhaps is the first thing that comes to my mind in holding back regular line up players. Even though we would like to see them play.
No updates on Zegras and Drysdale?
There seems to be wide consensus in favour of cutting the number of pre-season games – except amongst owners/NHL
I wondered whether the Canucks would have a better training camp this year after last year (admitted by Jim Rutherford himself). It's disappointing when the fringe players don't have either the will to make the NHL or a system in which to outperform their talent.
pre season means nothing so the NHL should test rule changes but not changing pre season rules.
unless it's like last year and players get suspended in the pre-season only to lose pre-season games.
Hope Florida upgraded where their game cameras are located !!! Ugh, they're TERRIBLE where they've been for years!
Pre-season should be something like, first rookie games, then prospect games and lastly what is somewhat close to final team. That way everyone knows what they're getting.
It's a good thing the Nucks are trying to get off to a good start this year eh? But seriously though, no matter how you slice it with your argument THG, this game was always going to be predominantly Abby Canucks, because when the Flames return to VanCity in a few days, they'll be bringing their scrubs to return the favor. But in general, yeah pre season games should be a lot more juiced up. The trend i think in the future will be to go that way, i mean the NFL cut a couple of those games out right?
Shannon is the best
Sorry Shannon I disagree; you need to find which of your young players are nearing the possibility of playing with the nhl club. I like the mix of a few veterans and concentrating on your prospects. Where else will you be able to evaluate them? The AHL, etc develops but at some point you need to see if they can play in the NHL.
I think if there is changes to preseason rosters, the schedule should change too, not to force teams to play 3 games in 24h period or otherwise force the mto have more than 2 rosters (like yotes..)
As a Devils fan I gotta say I'm excited to see Couturier out there again, love watching him play he's fantastic
They need to move back to Miami city and county to get further connected to that city and community to strengthen their ice hockey culture there in Miami as well Miami metropolitan area
9:27 meow call in between
100% agree with your take on preseason games.
Minnesota played Colorado yesterday, and both teams played their AHL rosters. If I was paying that kind of money to see an NHL game, even a preseason game where the intensity isn’t high, I’d be pissed.
I think a couple things can be done to address it: (1) have NHL and AHL training camps start simultaneously. A big part of the bloat on NHL rosters the first week of camp is teams trying to ‘cheat’ by bringing their entire AHL team to the NHL camp. That needs to end. (2) limit roster sizes in camp to something more reasonable rather than the 60-70 some teams are using. Maybe 30 is a good number. High enough to give legitimate roster hopefuls an opportunity but not much more than that.
Maybe also eliminate split squad games. And reduce the overall number of NHL preseason games. And lastly, instead of having a minimum number of veterans on the game day roster during preseason, maybe base it on number of minutes played last year, and have the number be something like 6,000 cumulative minutes played the prior year. That works out to 7 players x 10:30 minutes x 82 games. No more using exclusively guys who were largely AHL players or healthy scratches the prior year to meet the minimum. That 6,000 minute NHL minimum from the prior season would essentially guarantee at least 4-5 guys who were everyday contributors at the NHL level were dressed for all preseason games.
Years ago I watched an NFL preseason game. And the commentator watching said it's outrageous what they charged these fans to sit here and watch 30 people who will never make the team. This should have been free. It's just greedy. No stars on the field. Mistakes. Poor decisions. No, this is not a full price event and ownership/league should be ashamed.
Even for prospects their own leagues are more important than pre-season
It would be genius of TO to put Willy on the third line and saving some money on his long term contract. I hate how greedy that kid is.
do good teams usually have strong preseasons?
What if they had a salary cap floor for the preseason, like 1/2 of the normal floor? I think that's better than veteran numbers
Preseason lineups are sufficient. The problem is ticket prices. Knowing that most regulars will likely not be partaking, the tickets should be priced to reflect that. No more than half normal price.
I watched the Oilers game from start to finish. Sutter looked really slow and sluggish even against the mediocre lineup the Jets fielded…
The best way to upgrade the Panthers arena…move it from the edge of America’s largest swamp to a place where people live.
I know I’m beating a dead horse, but the news on Zegras and Drysdale is that they have both left California. Not good news on the contract
Pre-season tickets should be cheaper than AHL tickets.
Anyone know what's up with Spencer Knight? is he playing, nothing on Florida's site.
Columbus Blue Jackets hired Mark Recchi as assistant.
Yotes could take some notes of the panthers yo
Wake me when it’s NHL Opening Night! I’ll just watch MLB and NFL games for now.
I want to see Nylander in Seattle.
Keefe liked the chemistry between Nylander and Domi? It’s been one game and I thought that line looked weak. Settle down a little bit Sheldon lol.
Congrats on 290k Shannon ! 300 will be hit around the new year I bet
Is there a way to watch isles preseason in Canada since sportsnet now doesn't show it
I'm not concerned about the line ups with the preseason , but as you pointed out , the cost shouldn't be as high as it is . I would like to see the preseason games priced considerably lower .
I don't think that the Trevor Van Riemsdyk injury is a big deal for the Caps. I think that Alexeyev deserves a chance to be in the Capitals top 6 D, and I hope that he gets a chance to show what he can do while TVR is out.
Wish we would get some upgrades here in Buffalo. I enjoy watching games in the Harbour Center more than I do the actual arena at this point.
So Canucks are done even before season starts? 🙃
Pre-season rules can stay the same EXCEPT – Their should be a salary cap floor for the dressed roster. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if 1 or 2 players on the Flames last night was worth more (cap space $) then the ENTIRE dressed Canucks team.
Even hockey cards dont print preseason points
To anyone who didn't watch the video yet the Panthers will be allowing an actual Panther mascot into the arena to stalk the crowd for fans of opposing teams where he will then maul them, its called the Siegfried and Roy Experience.
Stars upgraded the arena too!!
Matt Luff rocks, hope he has a quick bouncback
Ticket prices for preseason games should be 50% of regular season tickets. I can't remember exactly, but I seem to remember that being the case in the 60s and 70s.
Shannon is a Gem
I think they should just change the definition of veteran. Make it so to count as a vet they had to have played so many games in the last season. I couldn't say how many games is a good amount, but I do think that would help
