I never really realized how much better the Canucks defense looks this year. Cole, Soucy, and Hronik as additions! Cole and Soucy are both big boys with beast-mode PK toolsets. Pair them with Hughes and Hornik respectively, and we’ve got a scary top 4. Reducing Myers to bottom pairing ice time, with the ability to pull him up in a pinch, and we’re in better shape this year than we have been in a long time. Pretty much since Benning took over, I was looking at the defense core, and thinking… “We could be a playoff team – if – the defense doesn’t suck. When he let Tanev and Edler go, there wasn’t much left in the way of depth. Both Soucy and Cole have net plus in the +/- indicating that they’re more likely to keep the puck out of our zone and in the offensive zone. They also add some size and grit to the backend, which will deter teams from walking all over the Canucks, as they have in recent years.
