Who are the Islanders top 5 prospects? (Version 2.0)

A few weeks back I put out my first version of the Islanders top 5 prospects and there were…..issues with my model. I fixed those issues and the results this time make more sense but still offer a few surprises.

  1. How can Cameron Berg be rated higher than Aatu Raty and Rajaniemi be ahead of Bode Wilde?? And no Simon Holmstrom?? These rankings are wrong.

  2. Much improved. Some suggestions:
    1. NHLE for U25 Isles who are in the NHL to give a relative perspective of what it took to make the jump. (Barzal, Beau, Aho, Dobson, Wahlstrom)
    2. An NHLE for all U23 Isles prospects. Over 23 should have a decent AHL sample size to understand where they are in the system.
    3. Depth Chart… ie: LD: Pelech, Greene, Hickey, Aho, Salo, Bolduc, MVS …RD: Pulock, Mayfield, Dobson, Hutton, Wilde.

  3. Why do you think Iskhakov (or do you know) went to the German league over the Finnish league? Is it better hockey? Is it closer to North American hockey?
Do you think his size will hold him back from making the jump to the NHL level?
What about William Dufour? Where do you project this prospect?
    Thanks for the content, Mitch.

  4. No Simon Holmstrom?? I'm surprised

I love watching the kids develop and I love the channel. Thanks
I have a very diff 3-5 and I also don't expect much from kids 5'8" and 5'7". I admit a size Bias. I do like Dufour though and Newkirk despite their seemingly lower ceiling plus Bode Wilde has too much upside for me so those are my top 5. Not counting this past draft.

  5. There are only 2 players in the Isles system that I have reasonable hopes could be real difference makers, top line or top defense pairing players. Aatu Raty and Samuel Bolduc. They have the size and skill and have real high upside.surprisedperformance rather than a lack of skill. I think that is a real possiblility, as mentioned by his coach in your interview, and he will bounce back. He certainly outperformed the 10 forwards drafted before him that played in the Summer Showcase by a mile. While it is a small sample size I don't buy the argument some put forth that it is a meaningless tournament. The players were saying that everyone was playing hard to make an impression for their U20 team. If the Islanders decided to trade prospects for current talent I would be willing to bet that Raty would generate a greater return than most of the players on your list. Of course, no-one knows the future and this is just one projection model you are using but it's not passing my eye test though.

  6. Really like your content…I’d say off a whim without doing extra research, my top 3 would be:
Salo (specifically for last years play)
    Bolduc
    Iskhakov

I’m really excited to watch what Cole Coskey does going forward…he steadily grew in the WHL but we have to remember he played with Cole Perfetti in 2019-20 and I think Perfetti should’ve been 3rd in the draft, not 10th to the Jets. Anyway, I personally think Coskey could be a bottom-six scorer if he could iron some things out. Would love to hear what you think about CC, Iskhakov, and goalie, Jakob Skarek. I liked Skarek in his draft year but I’m not quite sure what he is yet. Love your channel man!
