JYP 2016-2017: #32 Jerry Turkulainen (Highlights)

Highlight video from one of the best rookies in Finnish Hockey League this season. Jerry Turkulainen notched 9 goals and 17 assists in 48 games this season while his +/- was +14 finishing the season 3rd in points for all rookies and 2nd in his age group (18 or under) behind Ilves’s Otto Koivula.

Nobody expected him to even play in the adult leagues this season, but he got his chance because of some injuries and kept his place in the team from that moment on.

Turkulainen also made his Finnish International Team debut this season, but he was maybe a bit questionably left out of the U20 World Championships.

Strengths and Weaknesses:

Strengths

Turkulainen excels on his skating and passing and his good vision also helps him to make interceptions and backchecks. Has good hands and isn’t afraid to use innovative moves on a breakaways or 1 on 1 situations. Sets up players especially on the powerplay.

Team player who gives his all onto the ice every shift. Is surprisingly physical to his size (170cm 66kg). Isn’t afraid to defend his team mates or put his body on the line to block shots and is not prone to penalties.

Weaknesses

Needs more muscle so he isn’t pushed off the puck so easily. Could also improve his shot, finishing abilities and defensive abilities even further.

Draft Status

Turkulainen could have been drafted in the NHL in 2017 draft, but it wasn’t to be. He can still be drafted in next few drafts, but i don’t rest my hopes upon it. His small size acting against him in this case.

Future
———–

Turkulainen’s contract lasts to the end of 2020 so i’m sure we will see more of his excellent passes in the future.
