  1. I think the "smart marks" hated them and liberals hated them and even some tea party sympathizers might have thought they were being mocked but in towns in the former southern territories and in many other places they actually liked the act, whether they believed it was real or a work. And when they found the right foe in Rusev they got over as babyfaces.

  2. Mike Jackson was THE GUY in Continental Wrestling … Did it all! Swept the ring too, and he'll tell u that! Referring, shtick interviewer, ring announcer and best yet the Best Jobber in all of Wrasslin!! Just my opinion, I'm sure others will disagree…

  3. Again wwe pushed it on themselves when the Michael Cole and Jerry Lawler suggested that Jack Slater was getting fan mail from Glenn Beck and Michael Cole chimed in Alex Jones name as well, and then Beck and Jones responded to the Jack swagger and Zeb Coulter characterization and wwe was suggesting Beck and Jones wanted illegal immigrants out of the country because Jones and Beck were racist and agreed with the Zeb coulters character racist viewpoints.

  4. I’m actually surprised that given the McMahons are Republicans that they would sign off on such a gimmick. They’re mocking the people they would later expect to vote for their boy Trump.

  5. Playing ultra rednecks in a divided country, what would you expect from the audience. The liberal citizens see the gimmick as a racist rant. The conservatives see it as a rebel flag raising call for another Civil War.

  6. I find it quite amusing that the folks who tell everyone In earshot that professional wrestling is fake and scripted and the talent are just playing a fictional character are the very same folks who feign life-altering psychological damage because a performer…playing a character…on a scripted program…said or did something “bad.”

  7. I’m a liberal democrat. I voted for Obama. In saying that, I loved the “we the people” stuff. I loved Zeb Coulter (Colter?)
I thought it revived Jack Swagger who shouldn’t have ever needed reviving.
I think the only possible reason it may have missed the mark is because from a stereotypical standpoint, most wrestling fans who were educated loved it, so it gained zero boos from them. The others who identified with it either cheered or weren’t present enough. The gimmick was created to garner hatred for the character. What it ended up doing was revitalizing at best. That’s unfortunately the tradeoff with modern fans. We all know the deal and watch anyway, but some of us watch the “shoot” interviews and listen to the podcasts and all that. We end up loving the heels for who they genuinely are. Dutch is a clear case of that. He’s a rational and reasonable man. Even if I didn’t agree with his political views, even if I believed those views were accurately being presented as part of his character, having seen him perform (YouTube clips, I’m 34) and hearing stories from others about the man, I could never have anything but respect for him.
That’s the issue with politics today. I will say that diehard support for one specific individual does tell me a lot about a persons overall character, sadly, but that was never involved in this gimmick. I will also say though, not ever being involved with the tea party or outright saying that is absolutely true. However, at the time the tea party had used or co-opted the “don’t tread on me” flag, that I seem to remember being used frequently during this time of “we, the people.”
That’s probably the reason for the association.

  8. It's funny that WWE has become such nonsense that they are afraid of real mainstream heat… any wrestling company would have killed for that much exposure back in the day.

  9. WWE iSooo stupid for having a believable gimmick that worked and went out of their way to expose.
