I know it’s only the preseason and may not mean much, but Matthew Philips is onl line 1 with Ovechkin

  1. Poor guy, has to be on a line with a genocide apologist

Im rooting for him, I don’t think his style of play will translate to the NHL but he deserved way more of a chance to prove himself than what he got here based on his AHL career. He’s earned at least a consistent 10 game stint in the NHL.

I really do respect people that are big Philips fans, I swear. But if you watched him in the AHL playoffs, you’ll know that it is going to take something really, really miraculous for him to be an effective all-around player in the NHL. He simply does not have the physical presence when he doesn’t have the puck (and possession is HUGE in this game at the NHL level). Maybe that thing would be playing with Ovi, but I’m going to hold out judgement for now.

Y’all should see the discourse about this on twitter Lmao, people talking about how it’s “the worst Flames Flub of all time” and comparing him to St. Louis

It was always pretty dumb of the Flames (aka Sutter) not to give him any sort of real opportunity in the NHL. Yeah, maybe’s he’s not good enough or maybe he is but they could have easily had a better idea had they just given him a trial run. Such a waste.

Did he deserve a better shot? Absolutely.

BUT, if he makes it, its not going to be as a first liner baring a miracle or gelling perfectly with two linemates who can make up for his weaknesses.

WHO CARES we have younger prospects with higher upside who aren’t the size of my 6 year old niece who are knocking on the door and proving in camp they’re ready or close to it. I’d love if we just moved on from past BS and enjoyed what’s happening currently on our team. Phillips won’t last 3 weeks before being injured. I hope I’m wrong, but that’s my prediction based on his play style combined with his size. Guys his size need to play a completely different style to translate to the nhl.
