What the Mats Zuccarello, Marcus Foligno, and eventual Ryan Hartman Extensions mean for the Wild

On today’s episode of Locked on Wild, we discuss the new extensions handed out to Mats Zuccarello and Marcus Foligno, as well as the impending extension coming for Ryan Hartman. We look at the production Zuccarello has provided since he got h and how he has formed a dynamic tandem with Kirill Kaprizov on the top line. We look at his desire to finish out his career here in Minnesota, which is reflected by him taking less money to stay. We discuss the Foligno extension, and why it may be a gamble for Bill Guerin depending on if we get a repeat of last year’s performance. We also discuss the upcoming Ryan Hartman extension and also discuss what they mean for the Wild over the next two seasons, and why chances for young players will be slim unless there are injuries.

  1. Running this back after 3 early playoff exits makes absolutely no sense with Sammy Walker and Adam Beckham ready to go. Both of these contracts could blow up in their face with both on the tail end of their careers and Marcus Foligno was injured a lot the last 2 years.

  2. It’s sucks but those Russian prospects and the Swede are longer away than we thought so the GM is doing wut he can – ppl might not like it but Beckham n Walker are jus jags

  3. Ohgren and the Russian players aren't coming here to play 4th line minutes.

  4. The question I would ask Bill Guerrin is: What is the point of drafting these prospects and having one of the best prospect pools in the league if you're just going to play veterans constantly? What a disappointment.

  5. You nailed it Seth! My thoughts exactly! Sucks that it blocks the prospects and the only way to improve now is the 4th line. The deweys are hard to beat! These extensions were an absolute gut punch. At least everyone can be with their friends and sing kumbaya in the locker room and get to cabo early after an early exit.

  6. Zuccy's extension made sense, for the most part.

I wouldnt have minded a 2×2 for Foligno, but WOW…rolling the dice is an understatement by GMBG.

I still have PTSD from Vanek, Pomms, and Havlat. Screw it, throw Heatley in there too. Way too much money for fizzle-out liabilities.

  7. These signings should tell you everything you need to know about the REALITY of the prospect pool. Prospects are just that, prospects. There is no gaurantee. Some hit MOST miss. Expect Hartman to be extended next week. Signing these vets speaks volumes about where the organization feels this club is at.

  8. Trav hit this on the head, a prospect is well, just a prospect. This group, while underachieving in the playoffs, is a solid core group and is not as far as everyone thinks in making a run. Punch your ticket – (healthy for once) and I think they still could go on a run. A four year, limited no trade 2-year contract doesn’t hinder management to buyout the contract. The Wild is used to playing shorthanded money wise, 4 million is pocket change after the next two years coming up if this goes south. 17 has a ton of pride and would volunteer himself out if his play slips, prideful player. We all want to see the kids play, maybe they just aren’t quiet ready yet. If someone jumps up like Boldy / Faber there will always be room at the inn. Even if there is limited roster spots, make it impossible to send you to Iowa, like Walker is trying to do. Zuc comes off the books when 97’s contract hits the books, there is a plan here.

  9. Back to the Parise Suter bullshit. MN IS A JOKE NOT PLAYING THE HIGH RATED PROSPECTS. KEEP DEANO AND VETS ONE AND DONE IS THE RECIPE FOR THE NEXT 5 years atleast

  10. Also it's nice to see a team want to retire players. Not just get rid of them. It's a business, but these are also people.

  11. To start look at zuggs production the last
Two months of the season, it tells everything, I would have waited till the end of the year before doing anything.
    Sighning foligno for four years,
What the Hell is Billy smoking?
    I'm at a loss , I guess Walker Beckman
    Etc just don't measure up

  12. Omgarsh your the best for going in on the weekend of all this big news. My only thoughts are your opening scene *shredded paper/dreams" it will be ok. Just keep telling yourself that lol. It will be ok… right??? I mean good for the guys and I don't think they should be pushed out of the league but really Billy? I hope he has a grand master plan in mind. I'm sure he does. But oofda. Rough pill for the fans.

Edit: Good episode by the way! Im sure you took all the words out of the fans mouths. Sure did for me… LGW!!!!

  13. Kaprisov will leave in 2 years this team has accomplished nothing. Mark my words. The 3 next year will NOT rot in Iowa , where the hell do they fit now with the idea to sign Hartman. What a joke we keep signing 4th line talents

  14. Guerin had to do this. Although these guys are on the downhill side of their careers, he backed himself into a corner with the buyouts: The prospect pool is not ready and is just that – a hope. He wants to win in the short term to put supper on the table and he needs to keep his star player happy. He says these guys are "their type of" guys but look at the playoff record. I'll enjoy watching the Wild but I'm not holding my breath for a serious cup run any time soon.
