In this edition of Locked on Capitals Dan talks about the cuts that were made to the roster and how the camp has been divided in two groups. Group A appears to be the group that is going to be on the ice for game one of the regular season for the Capitals. Group B appears to be the group headed for Hershey at some point. A notable name on group A is Matthew Phillips. Matthew who played in the Calgary Wranglers last year had back to back season scoring 30 goals in the NHL and finished number 2 in the AHL in goals scored last season. He has played so well that he’s getting a longer look in group A. How does the Caps blue line stack up with the rest of the NHL. Andrew Cristall and Antoine Keller are killing it. They both said they learned a lot with their time on the big team.

I think their hopes are that mantha can put together enough of a season to trade him by dealine time. I am really happy with Matthew Phillips being on the team thats awesome. Hes worked hard and his play has been good. Same with Häman-Aktell i really liked bis play a lot too
Actually wouldn't mind Malenstyn/Dowd/Phillips as a fourth line. Essentially two wingers who can also take faceoffs.
Ovechkin / Backstrom / Protas
McMichael / Kuznetsov / Wilson
Mantha / Strome / Oshie
Malenstyn / Dowd / Phillips
Decent forward group. Would much prefer Mantha being moved out and Lapierre/Miro alternating as 3LW until Pacioretty is activated to give them both a taste of the big leagues.
Dan, I was thinking about Miro being put on team B..maybe it’s a positive sign? They may have evaluated him and got everything they hoped for and more. But they want him to season a bit in Hershey. Phillips has AHL seasoning, so he’s the bigger question mark. How will he stack up to the big guys? Gives them more time to see what they have in him.
