Montreal Canadiens prospect notes: Mattias Norlinder and Emil Heineman take strides forward & more

The Montreal Canadiens have loaned Logan Mailloux to the Laval Rocket for the time being, so we discuss which defenseman will be the last man standing when the smoke clears before NHL Opening Night (starts at the 1:45-minute mark). In our second segment (11-minute mark) we discuss Emil Heineman and the new physical dimension he has brought to his play and whether he has earned a spot on the Habs roster over some other forwards. Finally, we discuss who gets the first call up at all three positions over the course of this upcoming Habs season (20-minute mark).

  1. Surprised you didn't mention Matheson's injury when talking about Norlinder. That might be all it is. He's the guy that gets the injury minutes at LD this year.

As for Heineman, he scored well in a short AHL stint but 26 goals in 134 SHL games is suspect. At 22, odds are slim he turns into a gem in the rough.

  2. Cayden Primeau this preseason has outperformed EVERY Habs goalie.. Primeau is 1-1 with a 2.05 GAA and a 932 SV%. I understand he has not met expectations in the past but he is extremely young, goaltenders take time to develop. I dislike the thought of moving him before we get to see how he can play behind a better team

  3. For defense, I think Mailloux showed some nice things in the preseason but time in Laval will certainly be more beneficial so he can play big minutes there. As for Norlinder and Barron, I'd actually go with Norlinder. I think he's shown more offensively and even though there are some details that need fixing, id like to see him start out the season. Barron, on the other hand, can sharpen his game in Laval just like Mailloux. As for offense, I think Heineman will stick in the NHL, but maybe not this season. Id like to have Ylonen get some opportunities to show if he can really cut it in the show. For call ups i'd for sure have Roy up there, Simoneau as well and maybe Barron/Mailloux on defense
