Kyle Palmieri Practiced with the New York Islanders For the First Time This Season

New York Islanders winger Kyle Palmieri returned to practice for the first time this year and skated on the second line with Brock Nelson and Pierre Engvall. We discuss how Palmieri’s return affects the line combinations and the battle for the final roster spots in training camp as five players are now likely battling for just two spots.

Plus, the Islanders face the Flyers tonight in Philadelphia in the fifth of six preseason games, we have a preview.

And we continue our player by player look at the Islanders roster with Ryan Pulock. What will his role with the Isles be and what does he need to do to have a successful season?

  1. Curious if both Fasching and Gauthier will make the opening day lineup. Rather have both of them than Simon the Ghost

  2. Second line is where palmieri belongs. Until the man of glass gets his usual injury. Hopefully ltir candidate with $ 5mill savings and buy out after season to go with it. Only way to get rid of you know who overpaid non-productive slugs. Maggio or dufour can take that spot. Good preview shows earlier Gil.

  3. I wish Parise would take Maggio under his wing. I have a feeling that Maggio could become a Parise type NHL'r… Absolute best case scenario. Realistically, he'll be a fringe 2nd liner….on the Islanders that is, anywhere else… bottom 6

  4. 4 players battling for One spot! Fasching absolutely deserves a spot. A spot he already earned last season and he looks good in preseason.

  5. I heard an interesting suggestion (Grumpy old man said) of moving JGP to the First line LW, move Zeek to 3C, 4th line C can be just about anyone, not too worried about that

  6. I think Palms will play limited minutes this yr with health being the issue. I hope someone like Wahlstrom is integrated into his position!

  7. Gil, nothing about the guys from locked on the nhl? Of course they talked about the islanders last. Go figure.. lol

  8. Im disappointed to hear you think Johnston will be sent down. Guess it makes sense cause of the cap issue. But i really think hes our best option to step into the enforcer role? Especially if Matt Martin doesn't come back next year? Hes not afraid to drop the gloves and stick up for team mates! Do u think thats his eventual role?

  9. I totally agree with your opening day roster. Holmstrom needs ice time and he is exempt. Wally, Gauthier and Fasching make Ross even more irrelevant. Maybe Lou wakes from his nap and gets a 4th or 5th from a team that is desperate for some toughness. Ross can skate and has shown he has a nice wrist shot, but he's too prone to AHL bonehead play.
I like that Lane is giving the younger players so much pre-season ice time, but I'm starting to worry about the cohesion of the starting roster. They sure haven't been shining so far and would benefit from a regular season lineup in these last 2 games.

  10. Good morning team. Once again, Palms is an NHL player that wears a NY Islander sweater. I cheer for all the players that wear Islander sweaters. Those players are there for a reason. Could it be we don't have better players to take their roster spot? Perhaps. Maybe it's a lack of trust in the younger players from management. Let's no be so quick to forget. A lot of players were involved in that playoff push last season. But ask yourselves this.. would we have made the playoffs and even further, won a couple of games, if Engvall and Palms didn't play as well as they did?
Gil, thank you for another great show. Looking forward to tomorrow's episode. Until then.. Let's Go Islanders!!
