Should the San Jose Sharks Re-Sign or Trade Alexander Barabanov?

Alexander Barabanov has become a high-quality NHL player since his trade from the Toronto Maple Leafs to the San Jose Sharks. Should Mike Grier and the Sharks look to trade or re-sign the pending UFA? Start by examining what Barabanov brings to the Sharks, including his ability to create quality chances and transition the puck into the offensive zone. Next, look at comparable recent contracts, including Andreas Athanasiou of the Chicago Blackhawks, Ivan Barbashev from the Vegas Golden Knights, and Michael Bunting with the Carolina Hurricanes. With those in mind, what would a potential Barabanov contract look like, and why the Kevin Labanc contract could be a potential template. Then, analyze some recent trades and what the St. Louis Blues got for Barabashev, and the Nashville Predators received from the Winnipeg Jets for Nino Niederreiter. Finally, what Mike Grier should do with Barabanov this season.

  1. Sheng seems to agree with you that Barabanov (I can't use the Barbie nickname here since you discussed Barbashev who shares that nickname) isn't likely to get a first. It's worth noting that back when The Athletic had a beat writer for the Sharks in one of the last mock 2023 drafts they had us flipping him for the 31st overall pick and presumably the beat writer for the team that previously had that pick (I think it was Pittsburgh after another trade) was willing to accept it.

I lean more towards you and Sheng being right but I do like seeing some people thinking he has that sort of value.

  2. Keep him and resign him, or trade him to a team that can’t or won’t and resign him in the off-season. One way or another 94 needs to be in teal next year!

  3. Burning it down has been a relatively recent philosophy among GMs. They obviously have a reason too a lot of time but I dont think Grier should tear this down entirely

  4. I say keep him..would it be the worst we’ve seen?? Bt he can breakout and be a good sleeper if he puts in tha work 🤷🏻‍♂️

  5. I'd even entertain 3x6m. We won't need the money for the 3 years following this season and the cap may start going up more.

However, the 2024 draft is also the time for us to load up. We'll be in the running for Celebrini, but our prospect pool is desperate for a blue chip RD. With the upcoming draft projected to have many defenseman in the first round, I think you gotta try and turn Barabanov into a 1st. There is still a lot of cap pressure, and teams without cap space like Toronto, Carolina, Boston, Edmonton, and LA have some serious playoff demons they need to slay. Anything is possible in the flat-cap era.

  6. I'd trade him, hold out for a first but take the second, it's only found money if you cash it out. Signing him in free agency is fine though.

  7. I agree with you mostly, however, if a team comes in and offers either a 1st or an A-level prospect, I think that is a little more valuable to us than Barabanov. But I wouldn’t be mad at all if we re-sign him for a few more years, especially if he can help Will Smith and potentially Celebrini in seasons to come
