    Lafreniere isn’t a bust, though he’s not what you want when selecting 1st overall. He’s basically been a complimentary middle six scoring winger through his DY+1 through DY+3, which isn’t too shabby, and maybe there’s still reason to believe he can turn into a quality top six winger given how young he is.

    If we played him 18 minutes a night like every other first overall player not named Slafkovsky or Yakupov he’d probably be a 50 point player right now.

    So this tells me Lafreniere after year 3 has a

    * -3% worse even strength offense
    * -13% worse power play
    * +22% better finishing rate
    * +21% better G/60 rate
    * A 42% worse rate of drawing/taking penalties
    * -13% weaker group of competition while also sporting a
    * +17% better set of teammates.

    Yet has a +29% better projected War? HUH??? I think this model has some flaws.

    Let’s push aside the fact that someone would be forced to compare the 2 of them because really neither of them has lived up to their hype. If you factor in Laf has had better teammates, and faced weaker competition, and really marginally better at defense over 1 of the worst 1st overall picks in the last 20 to 25 years. Then to say he is a better finisher? Shocking news here people….a guy who creates no offense and has great teammates is atleast decent at burying the looks he gets? Over a guy who never had that and was playing on mostly a rebuilding team?

    Do people lose perspective when they dive this hard into numbers?

    Can we see a comparison of these same numbers to say any other LW/RW drafted first overall in the last 25yrs? What are his numbers against Big Rick…..Or Kane…..or Ovi….Taylor Hall. How does he compare against those 4? I know the numbers don’t go back to the Owen Nolan days. But pick any of these 4 and give everyone a fair perspective of the level of talent that should be there, but clearly isn’t.

    You can spin this any direction you want. He has the worst PPG average over any other player drafted first overall in the last 25 years over their first 200 games. Even Nail Yakupov beats him. By the time Yak hit 200 games….his PPG average was : 0.4404 and Laf’s PPG average at the 200 game mark/season : 0.4212. WHICH NUMBER IS HIGHER? And Yak had 250 games played at the point of this metric. So odds were more likely his would be worse. But yet he was still higher…albeit not by a wide margin. LMAO. But how pathetic is that?

    PLEASE STOP WITH THIS NARRATIVE.

    If he turns it around great. If he doesn’t so be it. We whiffed and it is time to move on. I honestly wish him the best but the odds of him having a successful career as a Rangers are slim to none. Let all of us move on.

    I think we as NYR fans need to accept that Lafreniere hasn’t worked here. It is what it is at this point.

    It’s inevitable that he will be traded and probably succeed somewhere else. Just brace yourselves for that

    I believe in Laf’s potential and I don’t think we should count him out, but I also think comparing him to the biggest draft bust in recent memory probably doesn’t do him any favors

  7. Trajinous

    Am I nuts to think at 21 and playing 3rd/4th lines, its waaaay to early to consider him a bust?

    I watched the draft and Laf was described by the hockey expects as a “generational talent”. Since then, I have viewed “generational talent” as mediocre and average.

  9. I think if Hughes was equally struggling, it would be a misery loves company ordeal, and we would give him more slack. The fact is, we lost to the Devils in the worst way possible, and Hughes became a Ranger killer. And Laf was abysmal in that series, and that was a tough pill to swallow. Now we are super sensitive even in a pre season showing. I think we do need to give him some grace . Let’s see what this coach and new system bring. If it’s another shit showing, then we are in the position to make trades.

    I’m getting pretty tired of the constant shit on Laf posts and articles. Has he been what we hoped he would be? No absolutely not. However, it’s clear he has no confidence and is struggling as a player because of it. I’m sure he is painfully aware that he is underperforming relative to his draft position and that’s making him struggle more. The shit on Laf posts aren’t insightful or original, and it makes me feel bad for Laf the human who probably sees this kind of garbage and has to deal with it. I’m not saying he doesn’t deserve criticism, but comparing him to Yak just seems like a dick move.
