A couple Salary Cap notes from Worst Seats

Russo and LaPanta talked a fair bit about Salary Cap on this week’s Worst Seats in the house, starting around the 57:40 mark.

Highlights:
-The season cap hit is $83.5M
-There are ~185 days in the season.
-Each players’ daily cap hit is their yearly AAV divided by the number of days in the season
-Whenever a player is on the roster, it is assumed that he is on the roster for the rest of the year
-We have $818k in cap space with 2G 12F 7D
-Walker, Beckman, Hunt, Wallstedt etc. Make a little bit more than this.
-By sending Petan, Letteri, Khaira down, they accrue cap space
-It will take about 9 days at 12F to just barely be able to call up Walker or Beckman instead of Letteri/Kharia
-The waiver exempt players could theoretically be sent down on off days to accrue cap space
-Without the taxi squad, these players would actually have to go to Des Moines (or wherever Iowa is if they are on a road trip)
-This will piss off agents because the players will have to be paid their AHL salary
-Kind of a last resort thing. The main way to accrue cap space is to carry 12F and be $818k/185 per day under the cap each day

That’s not really true. They can reassign them without requiring them to report to Iowa. But the players can’t participate in NHL team meetings or practices, and the team then doesn’t cover travel or lodging at home or on the road so there are very limited opportunities the team can actually do it without negatively impacting the player more than what might be reasonable.

I think this is the most important note. That being said, Kharia is likely the call up before either of those players.
