Per Capfriendly: The Devils will have $7,490,032 in cap space at the trade deadline. Across teams that are projected not to make the playoffs who would you target as a potential rental?

First of all this is beyond early to ask this…..second with the solid core we’ve built we don’t want rentals we need space to secure more players long term….Mercer will need a deal, Luke Hughes will likely need one, Nemec may end up needing one, and pending how his season goes we likely will need to sign Schmid or Vanecek (maybe both economically if the tandem works well)…..this is a team with a long window of cup contender status that is just now beginning so giving up assets and paying rentals shouldn’t be something we worry about

Can someone explain how this works – how do we gain cap space by the trade deadline?

the biggest acquisition this team could make to take them from playoff pretender to legitimate cup threat is a young elite RD from Slovakia.

If Calgary is out of it I’d be very interested in Noah hanafin

A defensive defenseman to play with Luke. Don’t know who. Wouldn’t give up Holtz for that piece.

is there a franchise goalie available at that price?

Best goalie available

If detroit is out of it i’d take a look at Daniel Sprong.

If Holtz isn’t up to snuff at the trade deadline we could look to move him or just replace him with a number of interesting options. Reinhartcoudl be interesting
Nanojack
Hellebuyck at 50% retained

Probably a legit penalty killing d man who could play third pair with Luke over smith or miller. Or if holtz isn’t fitting in for whatever reason and they want to move on, retained Henrique would be nice.

Super early. But… Since you asked:
Tyler Myers Viktor Arvisason Anthony Beauvillier Matt Dumba
