The New Jersey Devils earned their first win of the 2023-24 season. They narrowly defeated the Detroit Red Wings 4-3. It wasn’t exactly a good first impression to open up the season, but a win is a win. Jack Hughes had an interesting outing and blew his chance of potentially winning the Lady Byng Award in 2024. Vitek Vanecek was arguably the best player for the Devils.

If you look around the league a lot of real good teams had a rough game 1 (Edmonton for example). I think there was some first game anxiousness or something. Thank you for mentioning Siegenthaler. The only place I saw talking about him was the Swiss sports news.
As a longtime Devils fan I'd rather people let Jack be his own man than be compared to 99. I didn't agree with that roughing penalty Jack's been injured before getting boarded on hits like that redwing was trying. If he needs to take a penalty to defend himself then take it, if it means he doesn't get boarded. If Jack doesn't stand up for himself he's gonna get injured. And Vs the man! I believe in him and Akira but the team is gonna have to play well in front of them too.
Not easy to watch cause it wasn't on locally. So yeah. Thanks for making it harder to be a Devils fan.

I was at the game and let’s just say this. Officiating aside, this game in general is gonna be one of our worst games of the season and it really wasn’t all too bad done the second and third period. It for sure looked and felt like the devils had a lack of urgency and energy for most of the game and that combined with the weird lack of chemistry out of nowhere is what led to the on ice product that we saw. I told so many people we are going to miss Severson for one big reason and that is breaking out the puck which we saw was a major issue yesterday with the countless amount of turnovers in our own end as well as just stagnant play by the defense. I’m not saying I expect a win against the Coyotes but I do expect we see a much much more connected and faster performance tomorrow, if I had to guess id say a 3-2 Shootout loss tomorrow sounds about right. One line that I think stood out as not that great in all facets was the Nico line as there just seems to be just a little bit of timing issues with creating plays and such. I honestly wouldn’t mind seeing us go with a Toffoli-Nico-Timo line and then a Mercer-Hughes-Bratt line today. Also why the heck are we giving up our right shot threat on PP1 to Luke Hughes. Make Luke work for that spot on PP2 cause teams will recognize Luke doesn’t really have a shooting mentality as he just looking to dump it to Jack or Bratt on his sides. I loved the 4th line. I think Holtz had a good showing honestly, but I wanna see him progress even further which I do expect. It’s only up from here devils fans, trust me after last years first two game blunders, this feels like a good thing to win a game where we played at maybe 10% of our actual potential.
