Contract should age well considering that 4-5 years in, it will look like a low to mid level contract for a defenseman. If he’s still playing at a high level, this absolute steal of this contract will look highway robbery.

One thing you seem to ignore here is that practically 7,25 M USD is not 7,25 M USD. That is, yes, I understand if we talk about money as money and absolutely about nothing else than money as money, I totally agree.
But if the 7,25 M USD is for you first and foremost a salary cap hit, then you need to consider the percentage and not dollars. In 2005 7,25 M USD was closer to 19 percent (of 39 M USD), and in 2023 it is less than nine percent (of 83,5 M USD). I don't know – no-one does – that what the salary cap in 2031 will be, but I think most of experts are saying it is way more than 83,5 M USD. So the actual value of the 7,25 M will go way down. Again, this all if that 7,25 M USD is for you first and foremost a salary cap hit and not real money.
