Why Wasn’t the Minnesota Wild Blue Line Addressed Beyond Brock Faber? #mnwild #minnesotawild

On today’s episode of Locked on Wild, Alex Micheletti joins as we start by recapping a rough loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs. and what the Wild can do about their concerning defense. We discuss why no changes were made in the offseason, and why neither Alex Goligoski or Jon Merrill are full time players anymore. We also discuss the impressive starts for Marco Rossi and Brock Faber. With Rossi it all stems from confidence, and he has a ton out on the ice right now. Faber’s numbers considering what the rest of the defense is doing are extremely impressive. We finish by looking at what the lineup could look like if Matt Boldy misses time, and preview games this week against Montreal, Los Angeles and Columbus!

  1. I mentioned a month ago, I believe, on this site. That 10 games are needed to see how the season will unfold. We know going in the Wild are the same team players wise as last year. 10 games are needed to see how the other teams in our conference have improved.
Ok, so if the Wild has the same team, we know on D, Merrill, and Gologosky are extremely lame. We know that. We know the Wild on the last 2 d, need to be bigger and more defensive. So that gives us 4 solid D. But we also know Jared Spurgeon is 5'8" and a buck 65. And a solid body check can take him out for a while. We know that. It's history. So that gives us 3 d and Spurgeon when he's healthy. So, going into the season, I seen a really weak 6 man d core. 8 games left to get a good feel for the season.

  2. The Wild would be better off jettisoning Merrill for a low pick and use cap on another rookie Defenseman. Just bring up someone and let them cook

  3. Merrill / Goligoski scare the hell out of me. Great point on backing in. As a wing – there’s nothing better then when the D backs up as it creates so many options. Pass with lanes and options, shoot, drop pass, drive the net – advantage forward. Add in the talent level of Toronto’s all-star forwards and it was most likely a L going in. This is the year of cap hell, please give Mermis a shot. I know I inquired about Lambos on Sota Podcast and I guess we can’t afford Lambos at this point- holy cow. Add in the fact Gusty looked human on a few goals and it deteriorated quickly. He was left hanging repeatedly however, so no blame between the pipes.
The score in Toronto was a little deceiving however as the Wild were pushing until the stupid penalty which seemed like a tic tac call at that stage of the game. Hold your whistle – but it is Toronto so expected. Rossi looks great, as well as Boldy, Faber, Duhaime, Gusty so far. 97 will come around as will the first line. 1-1 after two, is a good start all things considered. Fingers crossed on 12…

  4. Perhaps they should have put Spurgeon on long term injury reserve so that they could bring someone up from IA w/o taking a cap hit?
