If this is Games Played, it doesn’t account for age and injuries, and the games lost to Covid Seasons early in Matthews Career. It might be better to track how many goals they both had by each age

I think it is just safe to say that they are both awesome and lighting the lamp.

The reason Ovi is even in the running to catch Gretzky’s record is due to his longevity and ability to consistently put up great numbers late in his career. No other player has scored at his level in their mid-late 30s. I can see Matthews slightly eclipsing Ovi over the first 10 or so years, but I’d be very (pleasantly) surprised if he’s putting up big numbers in his mid/late 30s like Ovi has been able to do.

That said, barring injuries, I expect Matthews to finish somewhere in the top 10 all-time for goals scored.

Time to pump the brakes a little.

Ovechkin is a machine, Matthews will need a machine to use his limbs in 15 years.

Ovi had 2 years where his scoring dropped. Than he said I’m back. I’m guessing this was around that time.

Also I saw a YouTube video that broke down goal scoring by era and amount of goals scored per game in the NHL. Ovi needs one more goal to pass Gordie Howe as the best ever (Gretzky was third).

Ovi and Gretzky have 9 50 goal plus seasons. There were over 130 50 goal seasons in Gretzky era. I think they said 33 in Ovi’s.

Seems like 2-3 a year now (scoring has gone up)

It doesn’t really matter how it ends up at the end. Ovechkin has had amazing health and longevity and deserves all of the accolades for years of productivity. But for right now, this is a pretty great achievement and benchmark for two incredible goal scorers.
