Marner – Played a bad game. He overpasses when he loses confidence. The guy needs to shoot more, Matthews doesn’t need to score ALL the goals on his line. Marner only had 1 shot on goal all game.
Bertuzzi – I liked what he was doing but it doesn’t seem like he’s got good chemistry with Matthews and Marner. I think that is more a function of time though. It really makes you appreciate Bunting and Hyman a lot more when you see Bertuzzi who was a 30 goal scorer last year struggle to find a role on a line. It’s not easy to play with star players.
Domi – He sucked. I’ve always been a Max Domi skeptic because he reminds me a lot of Kapanen, another guy here who always had chemistry issues on a line. Domi didn’t record a single shot on goal. I think him and Marner would do well together because Marner gives everyone a career year.
Nylander – Man if he plays like that all year he’s gonna be a lot more expensive than $10 million. He was incredible last night.
Tavares – I honestly think that Marner is better served with Tavares and Domi as a line. Marner provides the defensive support and the playmaking abilities while Domi and Tavares can feed off Marner.
Klingberg – We knew the story with him when he was signed, good in the offensive zone, bad in the defensive zone. That said, when he has the puck in the defensive zone he’s really good on breakouts. He’s been better than I expected. I was thinking a less mobile Tyson Barrie when he was signed.
Woll – Played as well as you could reasonably expect him to.
Minten – Needs to work on his finishing, like his chemistry with Knies though.
Nobody else stood out in a good or bad way.
That was a terrible game last night. The bottom 6 got massacred last night. I like big hits and like the fights, but the 4th line needs to contribute with actual hockey. And I think Knies and Minten would benefit from playing with a good pro. O’Reilly was perfect for Knies last year.
Last night, Perry taunted the crowd. Reaves clearly didn’t stop it.
Obviously, thats not on Reaves but it shows you that Reaves “stopping” those kinds of things just doesn’t happen.
The Leafs will need a 4th line that can contribute 30 goals this year and Im not sure they can do that.
Matthews and Marner aren’t good enough to make the money they do and play together.
For them to work they need to produce like McDavid and Drai every game. They’ve proven time and again it’s not possible.
Because they cost so much and play together it leaves like 8M for the bottom 6. Obviously an 8M bottom 6 is going to get outplayed by ones making 12-14M.
Matthews, Marner, and Nylander all need to drive their own lines to elevate the play of the players around them. Knies isn’t going to produce with Jarnkrok but he will with Nylander. Jarnkrok isn’t going to produce with Knies but he will with Matthews etc. Domi is a similar player to Bunting. If you want him to succeed you need to put him in the proper role. Need to spread out your starts ala Vegas.
Bertuzzi – Matthews – Jarnkrok
Domi – Tavares – Marner
Knies – Minten – Nylander
