The Winnipeg Jets Shock The NHL With Massive 7-Year Extensions For Scheifele And Hellebuyck!

On tonight’s episode, we dive into the jaw-dropping news that the Winnipeg Jets have re-signed Mark Scheifele and Connor Hellebuyck to matching 7-year deals. How on earth did the Jets manage to keep such landscape-altering news completely under wraps? Are the contracts themselves good value, just about on-target for market expectations, or big overpayments? Has Winnipeg made a huge mistake, or made a great call for the present and future? How will these moves change Winnipeg’s approach to the next several seasons of Jets hockey? Are the Jets adjusting course, or is this what they were angling for all along?

  1. Chevy is freaking stupid. Very, very dumb move that will set this franchise back. I get that he's big on loyalty & stuff. Winnipeg is a very, very difficult place to both live in & play in because of how freaking cold it is. If this was about loyalty, why not resign them for 3 years & bring them back as coaches or executives instead? How are we gonna have enough money resign Lambert, Barlow, McGroriarty, Milic & Diventcentis when they blow up? Stupid, Stupid move. I'd fire both Chevy & Bowness & replace them with Ryan Hardy from the Leafs & Joel Ward from the Henderson Silver Knights to help lead our team moving into the future because both Chevy & Bowness have absolutely no idea what they're doing right now.

  2. I heard with cap increase, they will have 18m free next season. Well, glad 37 is on are team and not someone else’s. For 55, apparently there were no takers and he felt the Jets were his best bet. We’ll hear more tomorrow at the press conference. If 55 was a great defensive centre, he would be getting 9 or 9.5m/ yr.

  3. Very smart and good deal for the Jets. When the Cap increases, and with inflation at 4 %
per year, $ 8.5 million will seem like a steal, 4 years down the road. All it will buy you is
a second line center at best. Think "long term" on this deal, as it's really a winner. Helle is
in the Top 4 to 5 Goalies in the NHL ( check) and Scheifele is a # 1 center coming off a
42 Goal season ( check). The Jets need these 2 core players to build around. I very much
like this deal, and it's affordable.

  4. Harrison, the Helly contract had to be done, he is too good of a goalie, will provide stability for at least 4 years, and no way he was going to resign without lots of term. The Scheifele contract though is a huge mistake. Scheif has proven he has no defensive game, refuses to listen to the coach, and when he gets older, good chance he falls off a cliff like wheeler. Also as another person has pointed out, "How are we gonna have enough money resign Lambert, Barlow, McGroriarty, Milic & Diventcentis when they blow up?" This just proves Jets management just wants to be in the mushy middle, and not rebuild.

  5. You have to give to get, the AVV # is tremendous the term a bit long, but without the term they aren't signing A 1C and a top 5 NHL goaltender for 8.5 is thrifty, good job by cHevy.

  6. I'm not a fan of either player at this point as used to really like Connor but totally soured on him. Scheifele I think is a better value as 8.5M for a guy compared to Forsberg or PLD who never scored 30 or 40 Goals its alright. Laine they traded away along with other players instead of pay them like Trouba. Reminds me of when Islanders gave Rick Dipietro his contract or even Luongo when he had his long term heh. I can't see this working out when it comes to Connor short term or long. I don't think he was worth the current cap hit much less getting a raise. I thought maybe Vegas would pay him like 2 years 10M or a 1 year deal after this season. I'm utterly shocked by the term and cost. I'm not as surprise when it came to Mark. If anything he cost a bit less than I expected. I thought he would get 9 to 11M on his next contact for somebody :).

  7. Hey Harrison – I’m the Devils fan who commented a bit ago about the parameters of a Helly to NJ trade when that was looking a real possibility. I have three thoughts here…
First from the Devs perspective, my only concern w this Cup favorite-ish team is goaltending. If Vitek V and Schmid don’t cut it this yr, there was always Helly as a free agent for next year! Oh well…
    Two Jets perspectives…
As also a Jets fan, it just seems right both retire as Jets, and now Jets fans will have a playoff caliber team to be excited for all season. However….
I don’t think this was a smart move. The Jets could have completely rebuilt in almost an instant w the blue chippers and already NHLers they could have gotten in return for Conner & Mark. You guys could have sown the seeds of a long term Cup favorite, just like the Devs finally seem to have done. Now, I fear you guys will be one of those always-good-but-never-champions caliber team.
So, were these two signings really wise?

Good luck to both the Jets and Devs this year!
